On Wednesday, we proudly held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil our pediatric sensory-informed care patient rooms, generously funded by a nearly $142,000 grant from the Dunkin' Joy In Childhood Foundation!
These two rooms, located in our inpatient Joseph & Mildred Finnell Family Pediatric Unit, are tailored to children and young adults with sensory processing challenges and those who are neurodivergent or on the autism spectrum.
Each room was carefully modified to be a calming space aimed at reducing stress for both patients and families. The rooms include features like dimmable LED lighting, soothing ceiling tiles with scenic photos, sliding panels to cover medical equipment, wall-mounted activity panels, white-noise machines, and noise-canceling headphones.
These rooms are already having a positive impact on our community and will serve nearly 1,000 patients per year.
At the ceremony, we gratefully welcomed representatives from Dunkin’ and the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation, including local franchisees and longtime South Shore Health supporters Sue Andrade and Victor Carvalho, so they could tour the rooms, speak with our clinicians, and see the impact of their generosity.
In addition to these two rooms, the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation also funded our Pediatric Unit playroom, giving our patients and their families a safe, welcoming space to play and unwind while receiving care, and a separate “Joyful Space” at South Shore Medical Center Norwell.
We’re grateful to Dunkin’ and the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation for making these spaces possible and for helping us best support all of our pediatric patients.
We also send a special “thank you” to the many colleagues who supported the creation of these spaces and offered their expertise to help bring them to life.
