That’s a wrap!

Team Cleft Repair has completed their second mission in Laos, offering more than 50 patients a life-changing surgery. Their final day of work included an 18-year-old patient who had waited his whole life for his cleft lip repair; a 12-year-old boy who was abandoned by his mother due to his cleft lip; and six others awaiting their chance at a new trajectory. The team was also met by provincial officials and hospital administrators.

“Their presence is a reminder that the love of this mission belongs not just to us, but to the people of this province…and to Laos itself,” team leader Myhanh Nguyen wrote.

Congratulations, Team Cleft Repair! 💙

More snapshots of Team Cleft Repair’s time in Laos!

Today, the team tackled ten cases, three of whom were returning patients. With each mission, Team Cleft Repair not only sees new patients in need of their help, but offers a continuity of care to patients seen in previous years. One such patient was 15-month-old Sy, who had is lip repaired last year and returned for a palate repair.

Team Cleft Repair has had another successful day in Laos!

Each surgery brings the chance to change not just the life of the patient, but the trajectory of a family. Just one example is an 11-year-old boy named Akham who had a bilateral cleft lip and palate repair operation on Wednesday. The boy had been taken out of school due to relentless teasing and had been living with his elderly grandmother, but the surgery has given a chance at a new future.

“If today’s repair allows Akham to return to school, then perhaps we will have helped break another cycle—this one between poverty and opportunity,” team leader Myhanh Nguyen writes.

Find a full recap of the day on our page, and stay tuned to see how the rest of the mission unfolds! 💙

Team Cleft Repair is changing lives in Laos!

Today, the team took on 15 surgeries. Though their patients ranged in age from just 6 months old to 64 years old, the theme across all cases remained the same: hope. These stories of newfound hope included a 14-year-old girl abandoned by her parents because of her facial deformity and a 13-year-old girl whose parents—who had shielded her at home from teasing—burst into tears upon seeing her facial reconstruction.

“They went from one crew member to another—crying, hugging, even kissing us in gratitude, joyful that their beloved daughter See can now be seen for who she is for the first time,” team leader Myhanh Nguyen wrote. “Days like this remind the crew why we journey so far across the globe.”
