Resharing this amazing information.

“When a baby suckles at its mother's breast, a vacuum is created. Within that vacuum, the infant's saliva is sucked back into the mother's ni**le, where receptors in her mammary gland read its signals. This "baby spit backwash," as she delightfully describes it, contains information about the baby's immune status. Everything scientists know about physiology indicates that baby spit backwash is one of the ways that breast milk adjusts its immunological composition. If the mammary gland receptors detect the presence of pathogens, they compel the mother's body to produce antibodies to fight it, and those antibodies travel through breast milk back into the baby's body, where they target the infection.”

I've been following this foal's story since his very premature birth. He was supposed to be a miscarriage. It's amazing how many parallels there are with NICU premature neonates and premature horses as well as many similarities in lactation.

We try to have human babies hold off on bottle feedings the first month because of babies developing what we call "a bottle preference". This baby horse isn't nursing very well bc he had to be fed via a nasogastric tube (at first bc he was too premature and then he was aspirating). He eventually graduated to lapping up milk out of a pan. So he isn't as interested in nursing.

Breastfeeding is a lot more work for the baby horse (same with humans) than lapping it up from a tub or being fed by a tube. This is why human babies and this baby horse develop a preference to get feeds from a bottle or tub. Exactly why we hold off on bottles while babies establish good breastfeeding form. Just like in human lactation, mom's milk production will decrease if the baby horse doesn't exclusively breastfeed, or if the latch isn't correct. This mama horse doesn't have a lot of milk because her teats were not stimulated to produce hormones that make breastmilk.

I've been cheering this little one in since its birth.

This mama's decision made me so happy!!! Good choice mama. Never EVER be afraid to nurse in public!!!!!

"I wouldn’t normally do this but while looking through so many pics from Tristan’s younger days with his birthday fast approaching this one really tugged at my heartstrings!⁣

When my husband took this pic I was slightly embarrassed for some reason!⁣

We were with our friend in an Uber in NYC and Tristan was so fussy and hungry so I figured I’d nurse him while we were in stand still traffic in the car. Next thing you know we actually get to the last street the driver can drive down and we have to get out. ⁣
I’m like ok I have two choices:⁣
1. 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘯𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬 𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘨𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 AND 𝘮𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 or⁣

I remember telling myself it’s ok you can do this! So we got out and I was so scared someone would see me! Or take a pic! When Jon showed me the pic I’m like, 'Ew OMG why did you take that?? I look crazy!'

I may not have understood the significance of this pic and why it was taken but HOLY WOW! Walking the streets of New York City while breastfeeding?!?! 👏🏽 Go Me! Go Us!🤩⁣

I see this pic now and see ONE AWESOME MOM!!!"

Has somebody told you that your baby doesn’t need to breastfeed at night past a certain age?  This age often varies by advisor. However, science tells us that in many cases, this simply isn’t true.

It's true! Never, ever feel bad for feeding, cuddling, or giving them what they need!
