A Periodontal Practice Offering Advanced Treatments

The goal of our practice is to help you achieve the best dental health possible. Our periodontal staff is dedicated to helping patients preserve their teeth through individualized treatments and personalized care. We provide a wide range of periodontal, dental implant, and cosmetic services, and we will work to develop a treatment plan that meets all of your individual needs. Your comfort and personal satisfaction are always of primary importance. For over 25 years the practice of Joseph R. Nemeth, D.D.S. & Associates has led the way toward excellence in periodontal care. Our office uses advanced technology that ranges from state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to therapeutic approaches that enhance the results of treatment and maximize patient comfort.

●In 1990 we became the first periodontal practice in the United States to use lasers in periodontics. Lasers provide tremendous patient benefits, and we now have four different kinds of lasers for patient care. Dental lasers can quickly perform certain procedures that once required more invasive, conventional surgery.

●In 1998 we became the first practice in Michigan to provide periodontal microsurgery. This expertise has helped us achieve excellent cosmetic results for our patients.

●Our practice uses high resolution microscopes that reveal bacteria associated with periodontal problems. We are proud to be one of only a small number of practices in Michigan to have the latest generation i-Cat Cone-Beam 3-D Dental Imaging Scanner.

●To the best of our knowledge, our office was the first periodontal practice in Michigan to use PRF material to enhance surgical outcomes.

●In 2014, Dr. Nemeth became the first periodontist in Michigan to be certified to perform the Pinhole Surgical Technique. Our entire staff is dedicated to assuring our patients’ comfort and relaxation in a friendly and pleasant environment. We work closely as a team with our referring dentists, but a referral by a dentist is not required for a visit to our office. Many patients come to us by word of mouth from friends and family who had a great experience at our office. If you would like to make an appointment at our office, please contact our periodontal staff to schedule an appointment at 248-357-3100. If your teeth zing when the cold air hits them, you're not imagining it.

As temperatures drop, we see more patients with sensitive teeth, especially when breathing through your mouth outdoors, drinking hot or cold beverages, or brushing.

Why does this happen?

- Cold air can cause your enamel to contract, exposing tiny nerve endings.
- Aggressive brushing or acid erosion can wear down enamel, making it worse.
- Gum recession can expose the root surface, which is highly sensitive.

Here’s how to help:
- Use a soft-bristled brush and brush gently.
- Switch to a toothpaste designed for sensitivity (like Sensodyne).
- Avoid overly acidic or sugary foods and drinks.
- Don’t skip your dental cleanings. plaque and tartar buildup can increase the problem.
- See a periodontist if sensitivity persists, it could be a sign of gum disease.

Feeling the chill in your teeth? Let’s find the cause before it becomes a bigger issue.

Most people think they’re flossing correctly, but here’s the catch: unless you’re curving the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth, you’re missing the mark.

That flat, snap-straight motion between teeth? It only skims the surface.

To truly clean under the gumline and remove plaque where it starts, you need to:

- Gently slide the floss below the gumline
- Curve it into a “C” around each side of the tooth
- Glide up and down to sweep away bacteria

This technique helps prevent gum inflammation, reduce bleeding, and improve long-term gum health.

Not sure if you're doing it right? We’ll show you at your next visit.

Because better flossing means better health, mouth and body.

Think brushing and flossing at home is enough? Not quite.

Even the best oral hygiene routine can’t fully remove tartar (hardened plaque), which can only be cleared during a professional dental cleaning.

Left untreated, tartar builds beneath the gum line, contributing to gum inflammation, bone loss, and even systemic health risks like heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

At our office, your cleaning is more than just a polish. It’s a key part of protecting your smile and your overall health.

Healthy gums = A healthier you.

When we talk about gum disease, we’re not just talking about your smile.

We’re talking about your whole body health.

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) starts in the mouth, but the bacteria that cause it don’t stay there. Once under the gumline, they can enter the bloodstream, traveling to the heart, brain, lungs, and beyond.

Research has linked gum disease to:

Heart disease and increased risk of heart attacks

Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline

Diabetes, worsening blood sugar control

Inflammation-related cancers and respiratory illnesses

Pregnancy complications, including low birth weight

It’s not just about cavities or tooth loss, it’s about systemic inflammation that affects your entire body.

The good news? Gum disease is treatable, especially when caught early.
That’s why we prioritize gum health, not just for your teeth, but for your total well-being.

Protect your mouth. Protect your body.
