For the past three years, our Orchards team members have had the privilege of attending Camp Tanuga alongside the youth we serve. Each year, the experience becomes more meaningful. Last summer, like every summer, camp counselors went above and beyond to ensure every child felt welcomed, encouraged, and celebrated. Understanding that many youth we support have experienced trauma, they created a space where kids felt safe to try new things, build confidence, and simply have fun.

For many children, this was a collection of firsts; their first time on a boat, holding a bow and arrow, or sharing a cabin and sleepover experience with peers their age. Throughout the week, laughter filled the air as campers went tubing, played gaga ball, made friendship bracelets, and gathered around the campfire for s’mores. On the ride home, children excitedly shared stories about new friends, favorite counselors, and memories they never wanted to forget.

One of the most special moments was creating a banner filled with handprints from campers and staff, which is now proudly displayed in our office as a reminder of the joy, connection, and confidence built during that week.

We are deeply grateful to Camp Tanuga and Bear Hug Foundation for helping make these experiences possible and for giving our youth the opportunity to just be kids, create friendships, and build positive childhood memories.

We are so grateful to Camp Tanuga and Bear Hug Foundation for welcoming youth served by Orchards and giving them the chance to experience the joy, connection, and the adventure of camp, many for the very first time. Your generosity created memories our kids will carry with them long after summer ends.

Thank you for your continued support and for capturing these moments so beautifully through this video. Because of partners like you, those we support are able to simply be kids, feel supported, and create experiences filled with confidence and belonging that will last a lifetime.

One parent recently shared how camp became a turning point for their child. After returning home from a YMCA summer camp experience, they noticed meaningful changes; stronger social skills, greater confidence in solving problems, and a growing sense of independence. Surrounded by caring staff and new friends, he felt safe, supported, and free to simply be a kid while fully immersed in new adventures and laughter. When asked what stood out most about his time away, his answer captured it perfectly: “Everything about camp was so much fun.” Thank you to the Rotary Club of Birmingham, Michigan for supporting 17 youth in their camp experience this last summer.

⛺ Let us know in the comment section your favorite camp memory growing up.

We are incredibly grateful to the NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter for spending an unforgettable evening with the youth we serve. Having our youth hear from former NFL players sharing their experiences through adversities in their lives, spending time with them and having meaningful conversations while enjoying pizza, decorating cookies, and creating moments of genuine connection is something our youth will never forget.

Experiences like these remind our youth that they are seen, valued, and capable of achieving great things. Thank you for investing your time, encouragement, and heart into making this such a special and memorable night.

About Us

A little more than fifty years ago Orchards Children’s services was established by the Greater Detroit Section of the National Council of Jewish Women. The founders recognized the need to improve the lives of children. This small, courageous group of women dared to question how things had been done. They believed that practices of the past were insufficient. They dared to challenge the status quo and begin something new. The founders of the Orchards looked back and plotted a course to move forward. It is doubtful that even those remarkable people who had the vision and courage to develop a new course could have foreseen the Orchards Children’s services of today.
