This recent cold weather has been a strong reminder of the importance of keeping our community’s children warm and safe. We are incredibly grateful to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. - Pi Tau Omega Chapter for their generous donation of hats, gloves, and socks to support the children and families we serve.

Because of your kindness, our youth will stay warm, cared for, and reminded that their community is thinking of them, especially during the colder months. Thank you for wrapping our children in love and compassion!

This story highlights the vital role Orchards plays in a child’s life, by helping restore stability to a family and guiding a child from the heartbreak of a disrupted adoption to the security of a loving, permanent home, with her adoption set to be finalized in the next few months.

[Story Below]

"As an Adoption Resource Consultant, I had the opportunity to support a family in the process of adopting a child who had previously experienced a failed adoption. This history presented significant emotional and behavioral challenges for the child, requiring intentional, trauma-informed support for both her and the prospective adoptive family. Changes in the team supporting this family made it difficult to maintain consistent knowledge of her history and needs, while also increasing stress for the family as they worked to build trust and rapport.

Through consistency and sustained engagement, I became the longest-serving professional for this family and was able to provide stability during a period of frequent transitions. I remained present and supportive as the family navigated the complexities of the adoption process and the emotional needs of a child preparing for permanency. By connecting the family with additional supportive professionals, providing relevant literature, and offering ongoing consultation and advocacy, I helped strengthen their understanding and capacity to meet their child’s needs. As a result, the child has begun excelling in the home, demonstrating growth and increased stability. With her adoption set to be finalized in the coming months, this example reflects the importance of consistent support, collaboration, and resource-building in achieving permanency."

About Us

A little more than fifty years ago Orchards Children’s services was established by the Greater Detroit Section of the National Council of Jewish Women. The founders recognized the need to improve the lives of children. This small, courageous group of women dared to question how things had been done. They believed that practices of the past were insufficient. They dared to challenge the status quo and begin something new. The founders of the Orchards looked back and plotted a course to move forward. It is doubtful that even those remarkable people who had the vision and courage to develop a new course could have foreseen the Orchards Children’s services of today.
