The civil rights movement was a crucial catalyst for disability rights. Dr. King's belief that justice for some means justice for all, interconnected the struggles of racial equality with disability rights, showing that dismantling one form of oppression benefits all. Equity and Access have since become fundamental values to community activists and disability rights and services.

His words, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” were proudly displayed on a banner used by participants of the 1993 New York City march in honor of the 3rd anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
