Raise your hand if your job requires you to sit at a desk for hours each day. πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

Even if you eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and practice other healthy habits, a desk job could be undoing all your good work! πŸ˜’ Studies link prolonged sitting with compromised metabolic health, higher risk of disease, higher inflammation, more belly fat, and shorter life span. Sadly, these risks remain regardless of our physical activity level outside of work. Worst of all, these metabolic changes don't happen gradually, but instead swiftly, within 24 hours!

This is especially frustrating news for the person working hard to manage his or her Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism condition. Thankfully, the answer is as simple as incorporating more movement while you're working. πŸ’»

Standing while working on the computer burns more calories, engages more muscles, and enhances metabolic activity. You can also take frequent breaks to stand up, go for a short walk, or stretch. If you do choose to sit, you can still mitigate the negative effects by sitting on an exercise ball and periodically engaging in some bouncing. πŸ’ƒ

⭐ Australian researchers found those who took frequent breaks had lower levels of C-reactive protein, an important marker of inflammation, and smaller waists as well. Waist size, like excess belly fat, is a marker for increased risk for heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other inflammation-related disorders.

So fidget, wiggle, walk, stretch, dance, stand and know that with each movement you are working towards more effectively managing your health! 🀩 Contact our office for more guidance on managing autoimmune diseases or lowering the risk that comes with a sedentary lifestyle.

Have you heard of ""discontinuation syndrome""? 😨

It is a term used for withdrawal symptoms experienced when weaning off anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants. 😞

The use of anxiety meds, or benzodiazepines such as Va**um and Xanax, have increased by about 30 percent since 1996. Many people can taper off their antidepressants with few problems, however, many experience symptoms that can be so debilitating they can't work or function normally. πŸ‘‰ These symptoms can include:

- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Fatigue
- Flu-like symptoms
- Insomnia
- Nausea
- Brain ""zaps and shocks""
- Hyperarousal (being overstimulated easily)

In a study of 180 long-term users of antidepressants, 130 reported withdrawal symptoms coming off and about half said they felt they were addicted to them. 😱 Short term use of medication to manage anxiety and depression can provide much needed relief that allows a person to function, but it does not address the underlying cause of these conditions and comes with many dangerous side effects. It’s not always easy to alleviate or reverse depression and anxiety, but it’s frequently doable, often with astounding results when you address the root causes. ❀️

Functional neurology uses a combination of neurological testing, metabolic testing, and lifestyle changes to get to the bottom of what is causing your chronic anxiety or depression. ☎️ If you've been suffering and want to stop use of prescription medication safely, while also addressing the root cause, call our office to see how we can help.

Inflammation is not always a bad thing! 🧯

Any time your body needs relief, damage repair, or protection from viruses and bacteria the brain sends what are called inflammatory mediators to that specific area of your body. πŸ”₯ This acute inflammation is a completely normal and healthy process. It's only when the inflammation lingers for too long that it becomes unhealthy.

πŸ₯΅ Chronic inflammation can be pain or soreness, or it can be ""silent"" and undetectable and ultimately lead to serious health concerns like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even depression.

While it could take years or decades for inflammation to progress into long-term health problems, silent inflammation may also manifest itself in some not-so-fun ways. Common symptoms that there is a fire raging beneath the surface include:

πŸ”₯ Low energy
πŸ”₯ Eczema
πŸ”₯ Digestive issues
πŸ”₯ Allergies
πŸ”₯ Stubborn weight gain

In-depth testing by a healthcare professional should be done not only to see if there is inflammation present, but also to see what is causing it.

🌱 Our office specializing in comprehensive and individualized testing to get to the root of your symptoms and come up with a plan of action that best suits your health needs. Give us a call to get started!

One in three adults in the U.S. have hypertension, commonly called high blood pressure. 😒

The American Heart Association (AHA) also suspects another third of Americans have higher than normal blood pressure. πŸ’” What is this affliction, and why does it affect so many?

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pumping against blood vessel walls. High blood pressure is simply when the pressure against the walls is higher than normal, making your heart work harder to get blood to your body. β˜€οΈ Your blood pressure naturally rises and falls throughout the day, but long-term high blood pressure can damage your heart and lead to serious health risks like heart attacks and strokes.

There is no singular cause of hypertension. Factors that can increase your risk of developing it include age, gender, race preexisting conditions, and family history; however, the biggest risk factors of all are lifestyle habits. πŸ‘Ž Studies have shown a high-salt diet vastly increases your chances of developing hypertension.

The easiest way to prevent high blood pressure is by eating a healthy, well-rounded diet that works for you.

πŸ‘‰ Avoid:

- Excess salt
- Processed sugar
- Foods high in trans or saturated fat
- Alcohol
- Whole-milk dairy products
- Red meat

Potassium-rich foods, like 🍌 bananas and 🍠 sweet potatoes, can help lower blood pressure as well as foods high in fiber and antioxidants, like pomegranates and leafy greens. Focusing on what you eat is a good starting point to managing your heart health.

Don't forget - there is no one way to be properly healthy, and every person is different. πŸ₯° Come into our office for more guidance on creating the perfect diet to suit your unique needs and lifestyle!

Are you experiencing extreme PMS? πŸ’”

PMS (premenstrual syndrome) varies from person to person in duration and severity but is often just taken as part of life. However, extreme, and debilitating PMS is not normal or healthy. πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ It is a sign that the delicate balance of female hormones is out of whack! πŸ‘‰ Symptoms of low progesterone include:

- Mood swings
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Changes in weight or appetite
- Crying easily
- Irritability
- Lack of concentration
- Anxiety
- Fatigue
- Frequent or irregular menstruation
- Low s*x drive
- Migraines

As you may have noticed, many of these are also symptoms of hypothyroidism. The chronic stress that lowers progesterone and causes PMS can also suppress thyroid function. For women who also have hypothyroidism, symptoms can overlap, and the causes can ultimately be the same. Instead of reaching for over-the-counter remedies, it's safer to first address the underlying causes of low progesterone. One of the most common causes is chronic stress. πŸ˜₯

πŸ‘‰ Factors that can cause chronic stress are:

- Sugar and sweeteners, too many starchy foods (rice, pasta, bread, etc.), and excess caffeine
- Food intolerances (gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, nuts, grains, etc.)
- Gut problems (gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, etc.)
- Lack of sleep
- Chronic inflammation (joint pain, muscle pain, skin rashes and disorders, brain fog, fatigue, etc.)
- Autoimmune disease (such as Hashimoto's hypothyroidism)
- Overdoing it; pushing yourself without breaks or enough rest
- Poor nutrition

βš–οΈ The best way to balance your hormones and ease the symptoms of PMS is focusing on basic nutritional support. However, you should also look under the hood to make sure there not something bigger going on, like an autoimmune disease. 🚘 Ask our office for natural therapies to alleviate PMS and support healthy hormonal balance and thyroid function. 🌿

Acne after age 30 is a very real problem for millions of women in America 😭

Up to 40% of women over 30 develop late-stage acne, and this is commonly due to menopause-induced hormonal imbalances. It can result in intense feelings of embarrassment, frustration, and can have damaging effects on self-esteem. Conventional doctors offer many traditional treatment options that address the surface symptom - Accutane, topical retinoids, even birth control pills - but these can have serious side effects and do not resolve the acne's root cause. 😀

What causes acne to flare in adult women?

πŸ”₯ Decreasing estrogen leads to raised levels of androgens.
πŸ”₯ Androgens trigger a surge in oil production.
πŸ”₯ Extra oil allows acne bacteria to settle in.
πŸ”₯ As bacteria accumulate, they generate extra keratin which is a fibrous protein that plugs up pores.
πŸ”₯ Blocked pores lead to inflammation under the skin.

Cosmetics can help hide blemishes, but also seal up your pores and make the situation worse. 😩 Serious and sudden acne breakouts may be worth a trip to the dermatologist, but mostly can be cleared up naturally with these 5 steps:

1. Stop eating inflammatory food - processed junk, gluten, dairy, sugars, etc.
2. Address your hormone health with fresh veggies, stress management, and supplementation when necessary.
3. Build back up your gut health.
4. Get plenty of rest to support your body's natural functions.
5. Wash affected areas, but don't irritate the skin by scrubbing too hard. And remember to moisturize!

As your body is changing, it's a good idea to update how you take care of it. ☎️ Consult with our office to make sure your body is getting the support it needs through the big changes that come with menopause and perimenopause.
