Hathor is a powerful and multifaceted deity in ancient Egyptian religion, associated with a diverse array of concepts including:
Sky and Sun: Often depicted as a cow whose body represented the sky and whose milk formed the Milky Way, she was also closely tied to the sun god Ra and the sky god Horus.
Fertility and Motherhood: Revered as a goddess of fertility and childbirth, Hathor was also seen as a divine mother figure, particularly associated with nurturing the pharaoh.
Love, Beauty, and Joy: She personified joy, music, dance, love, sexuality, and pleasure.
Protection: In her role as the "Eye of Ra", she protected the sun god from his enemies, sometimes appearing as a fierce lioness.
Afterlife: Hathor guided the deceased through the transition to the afterlife, providing nourishment and welcome to the spirits of the dead.
Symbolism and iconography
Cow: Symbolizing her maternal and celestial aspects, she was often depicted as a cow, a woman with a cow's head, or a woman with cow's ears or horns.
Sun Disk & Horns: A sun disk nestled between cow horns was her typical headdress, further emphasizing her solar connections.
Sistrum & Menat Necklace: She frequently carried the sistrum, a rattle-like instrument associated with music and driving away evil, and wore a menat necklace, a symbol of rebirth.
Sycamore Tree: The sycamore, known for its milky sap, was also a symbol of Hathor, representing fertility and life.
Complexities and evolution of her worship
Hathor's mythology displays inconsistencies and her worship evolved throughout Egyptian history. She was sometimes portrayed as Ra's daughter, other times his wife, and in some myths, she's the mother of Horus, while in others, she's his consort. Her role was so central that later goddesses like Isis absorbed many of Hathor's attributes and roles. Despite this, Hathor's cult remained popular and she was one of the few deities whose temples were served by both male and female clergy. Her most important center of worship was the temple at Dendera.
Connection to other deities and cultures
Sekhmet: Hathor is sometimes equated with the fierce lioness goddess Sekhmet, reflecting her dual nature of nurturing and destructive power.
Isis: Isis absorbed many of Hathor's characteristics over time, eventually superseding her in popularity and worship.
Aphrodite/Venus: The Greeks identified Hathor with their goddess of love, Aphrodite, and the Romans with Venus.
In essence, Hathor represents the full spectrum of femininity in ancient Egypt – a nurturing mother, a joyful patroness of music and dance, a fierce protector, and a guide in the transition to the afterlife.

Our Story

Arthur Graye started The GreenMan Studios in 2009 with the intention of making durable and beautiful spiritual items that help people find their way along their own individual spiritual path.

Mantra Meditation has been a huge part of Arthur Grayes life since his 500 hour yoga teacher training so it seemed like a natural step to start making prayer beads to help people with this practice. Mala beads or Prayer beads continue to be a cornerstone of what The GreenMan Studios does, but we have grown over the past decade to include MANY MANY more things. We now offer all kinds of handmade soaps and candles, Crystals, jewelry and pagan altar and ritual items.

We teach MANY classes around the DFW metroplex and travel to speak at conferences all over the country.
