Save A Smile---the nonprofit that Dr. Tonya manages for Cook Children's Health Care System--got a huge shout out in the American Dental Association News! Dr. Tonya says she is "blessed and honored to support our community alongside so many compassionate people!"

Save a Smile is celebrating its 21st anniversary of “helping kids smile and being the healthiest they can be,” said Tonya K. Fuqua, D.D.S.

We're so proud of Dr. Tonya and the work she does with Save a Smile, a nonprofit program led by Cook Children's that provides preventive and restorative dental care for children from low-income families. As program director, she manages a network of volunteer dentists who provide free exams and dental care for children in our community. In this beautiful story she volunteered her own services to provide life-changing care to three sweet sisters who had been living with severe dental pain.

Almost one out of every five county residents lacks health insurance. But thousands more lack dental insurance. Without it, paying for care is almost impossible.

As we honor our veterans today, we are proud to share that Dr. Tonya was recently recognized Veteran of the Year by the Fort Worth District Dental Society. Early in her career, she served four years as an active-duty dental officer with the United States Air Force from 1995-1999. Stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, she provided dental clearances and dental work for soldiers in all branches of the military. She also served as Preventative Dentistry Office and Manpower Disaster Team chief, leading a group of airmen from the dental clinic to prepare and serve during a peace or wartime disaster. Dr. Fuqua achieved the rank of Major before moving into private practice. Congratulations on this tremendous honor Dr. Fuqua. And thanks to all of the men and women who selflessly serve our country!
