Chest pain is fairly common in teenagers and is usually not related to the heart. Common causes include muscle strain, anxiety or stress, acid reflux, asthma, or viral infections.

However, some types of chest pain require prompt medical evaluation. Seek care immediately if your teen experiences chest pain that is severe, comes with shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, palpitations, rapid heartbeat, or radiates to the arm, jaw, or back.

These could be signs of more serious conditions, including heart problems. While most teen chest pain is harmless, paying attention to warning signs ensures your child stays safe and gets timely care when needed.

If you need help navigating recurring aches and pains your teen is experiencing, reach out to our office today to schedule an appointment.

By 4 months, many babies are showing exciting signs of growth and development!

While every baby develops at their own pace, here are some common milestones to look for:

Physical & Motor:
- Holds head steady without support
- Pushes up on arms during tummy time
- Begins to roll from tummy to back
- Reaches for and shakes toys

Social & Emotional:
- Smiles spontaneously, especially at familiar faces
- Laughs and squeals with delight
- Enjoys playing with parents and caregivers

Cognitive & Communication:
- Begins babbling and mimicking sounds
- Shows curiosity about surroundings
- Follows moving objects with eyes

Your provider will assess and discuss your baby’s development at every wellness visit.

You can call our office or send a portal message to request a wellness visit.

Before vaccines, diphtheria was a leading cause of childhood death. It caused severe throat infection and a thick membrane that could block breathing earning the name “the strangling angel.”

The diphtheria vaccine, now part of the routine DTaP series, dramatically reduced cases and is safe, well-studied, and closely monitored. Most side effects are mild, like arm or leg soreness or low-grade fever.

Why don’t we hear about diphtheria anymore? Because vaccines work so well, but the bacteria still exists. If vaccination rates drop, diphtheria can return, putting children and vulnerable people at risk.

Call our office today to ensure your child is up to date on their DTaP vaccine.

Kids need hydration even when it’s cold. Dry winter air and illness can increase fluid needs. Water, milk, soups, and broths all count.

A good rule of thumb for hydration is ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight. So if your child weighs 100 pounds then they should drink about 50 ounces of water per day. While this a good “rule of thumb,” it does not take into account health problems or activity level for an individual so always consult your child’s provider.

Also, always check with your provider before giving water to your child if they are less than 6 months old.

Give our phone nurse a call if you have questions about how much water your child should be getting.

Teens, listen up!

It’s no secret that scrolling through social media can make anyone compare themselves to others. For teen girls, this constant comparison is linked to rising rates of anxiety and depression, with studies showing a significant increase over the past decade.

Remember: most social media highlights filtered, edited, or staged moments are not real life. Your worth isn’t measured by likes, followers, or the way someone else looks. Focus on things that make you feel strong, confident, and happy, whether that’s spending time with friends, being creative, or practicing self-care.

Tip: Take breaks from scrolling, unfollow accounts that make you feel bad, and follow people or pages that inspire you instead.

Our providers are here to help if you are feeling anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed. You can call (or have your parent call) to schedule an appointment with one of our providers today.

College life brings independence, fun, and new challenges including exposure to germs in dorms, classrooms, and social settings.

Common college illnesses include colds, flu, mononucleosis, strep throat, gastrointestinal bugs, and respiratory infections. Vaccines are an important part of prevention, especially the meningitis vaccine, which protects against a serious bacterial infection that can spread quickly in dorms and crowded settings.

If you get sick while at school, college students can usually seek care through the campus health center, local urgent care clinics, or their primary care provider. Don’t ignore symptoms like high fever, severe sore throat, persistent vomiting, or a stiff neck as early evaluation can prevent complications and help you recover faster.

Need your medical records sent to your college health center? Check out our website or call our office to complete a records release.

Cold air can trigger asthma symptoms by irritating airways.

Using scarves over the mouth, following action plans, and pre-treatment when advised can help reduce flares.

If your child is needing to use their rescue inhaler more, has a nighttime cough, or shortness of breath with low impact activities, they need to be seen by a provider.

Review your child’s asthma plan this season and call our office to ensure they are up to date on their asthma medication follow up.

Eating well and staying healthy in college doesn’t have to drain your bank account.

Encourage your student to plan simple meals, shop store brands, and stock affordable essentials like rice, beans, eggs, frozen vegetables, and peanut butter.

Choosing water over sugary drinks, getting adequate sleep, and incorporating free workouts like campus rec center classes, walking groups, YouTube fitness videos, or intramural sports can make a big difference. Remind them that healthy routines don’t need to be perfect; small, consistent habits add up and support long-term wellness.

If your college student needs guidance on nutrition, stress, sleep, or general wellness, our team is always here to help.

RSV can cause serious illness in infants, especially those under 6 months. This season, families have extra protection available with the RSV immunization.

Babies can receive the RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab), which helps reduce the risk of severe disease. Pregnant mothers may also receive a maternal RSV vaccine, which protects the baby after birth.

These RSV antibodies work much like the natural antibodies a mother passes to her baby during pregnancy offering protection before your baby’s own immune system is mature enough to fight infections on its own.

If you have questions about eligibility or scheduling RSV protection for your newborn or for you if you are expecting, call our office and we’ll walk you through the guidelines.

If it feels like your toddler catches everything, you’re not imagining it.

Little immune systems are still learning, and toddlers are great at sharing germs especially in daycare or group settings. It’s normal for young children to have 8–12 viral illnesses a year, especially during fall and winter.

Colds can also seem “back-to-back” because viruses stack or symptoms overlap.

The good news? Each illness strengthens their immune system, and most are short-lived and resolve with rest, fluids, and time.

If your child’s illnesses seem unusually severe, frequent, or they’re not bouncing back as expected, call our office so we can help determine what’s normal and what deserves a closer look.

Is your baby bundled too much? Or not enough?

During winter, infants should typically sleep in one more layer than an adult would wear to be comfortable in the same room. A breathable onesie plus a sleep sack is usually perfect.

Avoid hats, blankets, and loose bedding in the crib to prevent overheating and reduce SIDS risk. If your baby’s chest feels warm and dry, they’re dressed appropriately. Remember, cold hands and feet are normal.

Not sure if your baby is dressed appropriately for sleep? Give us a call, we’re here to help you keep them safe and cozy.
