Fiber is our friend – right? Of course, it’s the unsung hero of your plate! It keeps you fueled, helps balance blood sugar, supports the gut, and is heart-healthy. Fiber is the silent overachiever keeping your body balanced and happy.

- Eat the rainbow. Berries, leafy greens, and more.
- Add crunch. Almonds, seeds, oats, lentils.
- Fill it up. Layer whole grains, leafy greens, beans, veggies, and seeds for a boosted bowl!

Registered dietitian, Lauren S. loves the versatility of fiber and how much your body can benefit from adding it to your diet. What are some ways you add fiber to your diet?

Med/tele nurse Kha is a well-known nurse at Sierra Medical Center and the care she provides to patients and families has created a ripple effect of appreciation. She was recently honored as a DAISY awardee.

The family who nominated her shared, "Kha was an outstanding RN! My grandma has been here with a hip Fx and ended up having a stroke. The last three days with Kha being my grandma's RN, she was going above and beyond, making sure to get my grandma out of bed, get her to the bathroom and into a chair along with her ADLs. Kha understood how essential it is to get a patient moving for proper healing from not only surgery, but from a stroke. She made my grandma feel normal again and not just another patient who was forgotten about. Kha communicated with our family every day that she had my grandma as her patient. Her passion shows through her care. We are so lucky that we had her for her three shifts hands down!"

We thank Kha for making a positive impact on our patients and going above and beyond to find ways to comfort her patients.

Great news!

Our hospitals have been recertified as gluten-free, reaffirming our commitment to safe food practices for those living with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities. We carefully choose ingredients, store food items safely and adhere to rigorous preparation practices - all with the patient in mind. This commitment is a nod to our dietary teams who have a high-level of care and focus on what goes on each plate they create.

Thank you to our dietary staff for keeping gluten-free certification a priority!

Labor and delivery nurse, Erin, was recently honored as a DAISY recipient for her unwavering commitment to a patient during a very difficult birth experience. Her nomination exemplifies the care, compassion, and dignity provided to our patients. Erin knows how to connect with her patients and be there in moments when there is grief. We are so proud of Erin - her kindness and empathy can be seen every day she is at our hospital.

"In 2024, my world shattered. I gave birth to stillborn twins and nothing could prepare me for the pain that followed...In the middle of that heartbreak, when everything was falling apart, Erin was there...Her steady presence walked me through the darkest days of my life. She was simply there in a way that mattered...She let me grieve without pressure, without judgment. She gave me space...and I found a tiny bit of strength...In 2025, I gave birth again, this time to my rainbow baby. It was a beautiful moment, but it came with fear and heavy moments.

Once again, Erin was there...She even visited me on her day off. I'll never forget how much that meant...She helped me find my way through the spaces in between...she showed up and kept showing up...I will always carry deep respect and gratitude for her and I will never forget her. Erin is the kind of nurse who changes lives quietly, just by being who she...people like Erin make all the difference!"

This family is full of love for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) heart patients. Mom and cardiac nurse, Nicole G. work in our cath lab ensuring patients receiving TAVR and other heart procedures are well informed, supported, and prepared for their visit. She's a beloved nurse at Sierra Medical Center and has certainly rubbed off on her eldest daughter.

Olivia was inspired by her mom's commitment to nursing and patient care and asked how she can support our patients. Part of a 6th grade passion project, she created TAVR care kits that included a crocheted heart, along with healthy snacks. On a recent visit, she shadowed interventional cardiologist Dr. Devang Desai as he rounded on patients. Olivia gave care kits to all patients that day to bring them comfort during their stay.

We appreciate Olivia so much and the BIG act of kindness she shared with our patients. It is moments like this that elevate care and make healthcare human.

When it comes to leading teams and supporting patients, Yuli, dietary supervisor at Sierra Medical Center, is a true star. She was recently honored with our Leader of the Quarter award.

A coworker shared, "Yuli does everything in her power to make sure we have what we need to do our jobs successfully. If you ask Yuli to help you, she will stop what she is doing and take the time to help you; even if she isn't 100 percent sure how to do the task, she is willing to learn. Whenever situations occur outside the norm, Yuli does what it takes to keep things running smoothly."

Congrats to Yuli on this well-deserved honor!

Washoe County is experiencing an increase in whooping cough cases and it's important to know the signs and symptoms to best protect you and your family.

Pertussis is highly contagious and presents such as mild, cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, mild cough, and low-grade fever. After onset, symptoms may progress to severe coughing fits that can last several weeks. Often the individual will experience a cough that sounds like a whoop, vomitting can follow coughing spells, or extreme fatigue. It is especially dangerous in infants who may experience pauses in breathing instead of coughing.

Without proper treatment, the condition can worsen and spread to others. If you or someone in your household is experiencing these symptoms, visit a nearby urgent care center or see your doctor for treatment.
