🩺What Veterinary Technicians Do
They’re not “just” vet techs
Veterinary technicians work spans medical, technical, surgical, and emotional care — often all in the same day!
😷Surgical Care
• Prepare the operating room and surgical instruments for procedures
• Sterilize surgical tools and maintain aseptic technique
• Assist veterinarians during orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries
• Monitor anesthesia and patient vitals before, during, and after surgery
• Operate and maintain anesthesia machines and monitoring equipment
• Place IV catheters and administer fluids or medications
• Handle surgical draping and instrument passing
• Maintain sterile fields throughout surgery
• Take and position radiographs (X-rays) — including post-op films
• Manage surgical records and maintain accurate patient charts
• Change bandages, splints, or casts and monitor wound healing
🥰🦴Patient Care & Nursing
• Perform physical exams and record patient vitals
• Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments
• Monitor hospitalized patients — including pain levels, appetite, mobility, and comfort
• Provide post-operative care and pain management
• Clean and maintain kennels and recovery areas
• Feed and medicate patients according to doctor’s orders
• Assist with mobility support for orthopedic patients (slings, harnesses, carts)
• Monitor for complications after surgery and alert the veterinarian if changes occur
🩸💉Diagnostics & Lab Work
• Draw blood, collect urine, f***l, or cytology samples
• Perform in-house lab tests (CBCs, chemistry panels, urinalysis, etc.)
• Prepare and stain microscope slides for cytology or f***l exams
• Run and interpret diagnostic equipment and lab analyzers
• Take and process radiographs, including positioning challenging orthopedic cases
• Assist in ultrasound or advanced imaging as needed
🦷🪥Dental Care
• Scale and polish teeth
• Monitor anesthesia during dental procedures
• Document dental findings and assist in extractions
💊💉Anesthesia & Pain Management
• Pre-anesthetic assessments and medication administration
• Induce, monitor, and recover patients from anesthesia
• Adjust anesthetic depth and support airway management
• Provide pain control through medication and comfort measures
• Monitor ECG, pulse oximetry, capnography, and blood pressure
👥📞Client Communication & Education
• Communicate discharge instructions and home care to clients
• Educate owners about surgery prep, recovery, and long-term care
• Demonstrate medication administration or bandage care
• Provide updates to owners on hospitalized patients
• Offer emotional support and compassion during stressful times
📝🧼Hospital Operations
• Maintain medical records accurately and efficiently
• Clean, disinfect, and restock treatment and surgical areas
• Order and inventory medical supplies
• Maintain and calibrate medical equipment
• Uphold patient safety and infection control standards
• Assist in training new staff, interns, or vet tech students
🚨Emergency & Critical Care
• Triage emergency cases and assist with stabilization
• Administer CPR and emergency medications
• Monitor and care for critical patients
• Assist with wound management, splinting, and trauma care
