Is the Cold Water Rescue Sling in your tool box? This year-round rescue flotation device gives you independent positive buoyancy for victims in water emergencies and is ideal alongside Ice Rescue Sleds, reels, or throw systems. It’s lightweight at just 1.6 lbs, 33” long, and features a non-constrictive design with a freeze-free stainless steel carabiner, a strong 6,600 lb rated strap, and about 16 lbs of flotation to help keep victims above water. The sling can be deployed by hand or with a reach pole to extend your reach and minimize risk during rescue operations.

Welcome to the very first MARSARS Minute — where we bring you quick tips and tools to help you perform rescues from a safer distance.

Today we’re highlighting the MARSARS Cold Water Rescue Sling. As a cold water rescue flotation device, the MARSARS non-constrictive sling is passed by hand or pole from a safer distance to provide positive buoyancy for the victim. The CWRS pairs perfectly with our Ice Rescue Sled or our Reach Pole Kits and is best used with either our Rope Tether Reels or Rope Tether Bags.

Quick training tip — remember the saying: strap to the back.

By keeping the strap to the back and the sling over our right shoulder, the victim will naturally try to make contact, as we are instinctively taught to shake hands with our right hand. The rescuer reaches out and grabs the victim’s right arm, and while maintaining contact, transfers the sling with the left arm over the victim, getting it under their arms to create positive buoyancy.

Once the sling is under their arms, the rescuer transfers from the victim’s right arm to the webbing on the sling, pulling it tight to ensure the victim doesn’t fall through. Then with the left hand, in one smooth motion, pull the Velcro strap from underneath toward the left of the sling, then over the top and back to the right side, securing the Velcro tightly.

Once complete, signal to your land crew to begin hauling the victim in. We’ve been teaching this method because it allows for an easier, smoother rescue.

RPI and MARSARS are proud to recognize one of our own. RPI Instructor Chief Ray Bock of the Netcong Fire Department has been honored with an Individual Meritorious Award from the 200 Club of Morris County for his actions during a February 2025 Ice Rescue on Lake Musconetcong.

When the call came in for a man who had fallen through the ice, Chief Bock immediately suited up and went to work. He crawled across unstable ice with a rescue rope, falling through twice while pushing forward to reach the victim. Once on scene with the individual, he kept him calm and afloat while coordinating efforts from shore. With additional support from Netcong Fire Department members, the team successfully brought the victim safely back to solid ground.

This is not the first time Chief Bock and his crew have been recognized for ice rescue excellence. He, along with Captain Jeff Jozowski and Engineer Mike Kunkel, were also honored in 2023 for a separate Lake Musconetcong rescue. Their commitment to training, teamwork, and professionalism makes a real difference when seconds matter.

At RPI, we believe in instructors who don’t just teach the skills, but live them in the field. Chief Bock’s leadership and superior ice rescue abilities embody everything we stand for, and we are honored to have him on the RPI Training Team.

Join us in congratulating Chief Ray Bock and the entire Netcong Fire Department crew on this well-deserved recognition. Ready to train with proven professionals? Visit RescueProInc.com to plan your next class and prepare your team for the real world.
