South Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition recognizes that practicing lactation in SC is difficult due to limited training opportunities and reimbursement issues. Offering low-cost lactation education is part of our mission to promote, protect, and support the art and science of human milk feeding as the superior form of nutrition and nurture for infants and young children. To this end, we are offering $100.00 scholarships for the 2026 conference to allow people involved in or aiming to improve lactation in SC to attend if their financial circumstances prevent paying full-price.

Hearing the news that one of our beloved champions in our community has passed away is truly heartbreaking. We want to take this moment to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Janell Green-Smith.

Janell was an amazing supporter of BirthMatters. She believed in our program and worked hand in hand with our doulas to help bring bundles of joy into the world. It saddens us that someone who gave so much to this world—through her advocacy for maternal health—has been taken from us. 💔

Your story matters, and we will continue to fight against the injustices in maternal health. We will continue to say Dr. Janell Green-Smith’s name.

The holidays are a time for reflection, gratitude, and giving. At BirthMatters, that means coming together to support the moms and families we serve. This year, many of our families are facing a particularly difficult season—some at risk of losing essential benefits.

BirthMatters is working to provide comfort, community, and care to families who need it most. One highlight of the season is our annual BirthMatters Christmas Shop, a no cost event where our clients can “shop” for gifts and essentials made possible entirely by donor contributions.

Today marks the start of the first ever Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Week! As an allied partner with the Deaf community, the DC Breastfeeding Coalition fostered the initiation of the first-ever Deaf and Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Collective. The theme for this first-of-its-kind observance is "Close the Gap Bridge the Divide: Establish Breastfeeding Support Access."

The purpose of this initiative is to provide the nation's marginalized and underrepresented Deaf community with accessible breastfeeding education, support, and community, because language and breastfeeding access matters from birth! Follow Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding to keep up with the observance's activities.
