Students from the Reidville Elementary School choir brought hope and cheer to Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham as they sang a collection of Christmas carols in front of our poinsettia tree. A crowd of providers and clinical staff came out to the lobby to hear the children sing, led by music teacher Liz Smith. Children also handed out handwritten Christmas cards as a token of appreciation to healthcare workers. Thank you, RVES choir! 🎄

Earlier this month, we were honored to welcome former NFL player Chris Draft to Gibbs Cancer Center, where he shared his passion for raising lung cancer awareness through the Chris Draft Family Foundation. Chris brought white ribbons as simple but powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and lung health education.

Thank you, Chris, for inspiring us and helping spread hope. 🏈🤍

In South Carolina, the five-year survival rate for lung cancer drops from 92% in the earliest stages to 8% in stage IV.

Today, for National Lung Cancer Screening Day, we recognize the care team that is detecting these cancers earlier – and saving lives.

Spartanburg Regional is prioritizing prompt and efficient care with the new Ion robotic bronchoscopy platform – which helps physicians perform minimally invasive lung biopsies, obtaining answers for patients sooner and informing treatment options.

Our local Spartanburg ZTA Alumnae and Wofford ZTA chapters met to decorate and stuff bags for breast cancer patients. The theme was "Saying Boo to Breast Cancer." The items included pink water bottles, socks, lip balm, unscented lotions, hard candies or ginger chews for nausea and journals/books. We are so grateful for this generous donation to our patients!

On National Mammography Day, we're celebrating the dedicated professionals who help save lives through early detection.

With nine Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health locations and two mobile units, we were able to provide almost 39,000 screening mammograms and almost 9,000 diagnostic mammograms to women across the Upstate in the last year.

Thank you to our incredible mammography technologists and breast imaging team for providing compassionate care and helping our patients stay proactive about their breast health.

After nearly five decades of service, leadership and a strong commitment to patients, Dr. James Bearden is retiring from a historic career in cancer care.

From his early days at Spartanburg General Hospital in 1976 to his role in shaping Gibbs Cancer Center into the nationally recognized institution it is today, Dr. Bearden is a pioneer.

As Dr. Bearden reflects on his journey, he shares simply: "I've been so blessed."

Please join us in celebrating Dr. Bearden's remarkable career and wishing him the very best in retirement.

Our Story

Gibbs Cancer Center has its roots deep in the Spartanburg community, from the time it was just a dream of two doctors to the world-class treatment and research center it has become today. Recognizing that cancer patients’ needs are very specific, Drs. Jay Bearden and Julian Josey began by convincing administrators at Spartanburg Regional Hospital to allow them to consolidate all existing cancer treatment and support services into a dedicated, single-floor unit, a coordinated-services approach that was virtually unheard of at the time. Local business leaders and philanthropists Jimmy and Marsha Gibbs brought the dream a step closer with a generous $1.2 million lead gift toward establishing a standalone center dedicated exclusively to the treatment of cancer. Located on the campus of Spartanburg Regional, the center’s mission was to provide leading edge research and treatment in a facility equipped with the most advanced diagnostic and treatment tools.
