Happy Black History Month!

All this month, we'll be spotlighting important local figures and places featured on the Southside Cultural Monument, located at the corner of S Converse St. and Hudson Barksdale Blvd.

Mary Ann Deku has been a longtime volunteer, humanitarian, and community activist. She served as an educator and school counselor for 38 years, president of the League of Women Voters, and was named a Woman of Achievement by the Miss South Carolina pageant in 2014. She has also worked on behalf of the Girl Scouts, AKA Sorority, the NAACP, and as a charter member of the Southside Heritage Committee.

On Valentine’s Day 33 years ago, Shepherd’s Gate opened its doors with one simple mission: to provide a safe place for women, moms, and children in crisis.

Since that very first day, hundreds of women and children have walked through our doors seeking refuge, and so many have found not only safety, but renewed hope, restoration, and new life in Jesus.

Here’s to continuing to open doors and hearts for many more years to come. 💕

Judy has been a counselor since 2013, but has been in the world of people development, coaching, and life study for much, much, longer. She has been married to her first and only husband for over 30 years. She is a mother, a step-mother, and a grandmother. Like most people, she was not raised in a perfect home and spent years learning to make healthy life choices. She stumbled into the business world quite by accident and found success in management and consulting.

Still, her natural gifts have always been in working with people. Whether it is encouraging a co-worker, comforting a child, or presenting solutions to a group of executives, she has a passion for helping people explore possibilities. She finally decided to pursue this passion in the field of counseling. She received a Master of Science degree in Professional Counseling, is licensed in the State of South Carolina as a Professional Counselor and is a Certified Addictions Counselor.
