Carolina Vision Associates’ history in Spartanburg goes back nearly 100 years. We are currently the largest primary eyecare provider in the upstate with locations in Spartanburg, Gaffney, Inman and Woodruff.Dr. Jay Shelley joined Dr. A.W. “Skeets” Biber in Spartanburg in 1979. Dr. Biber’s grandfather fit lenses in the back of a jewelry store downtown on Morgan Square. His father took over that practice and eventually it passed to his son who partnered with Dr. Shelley. The Gaffney location was opened in 1991 when Dr. Shelley joined Turner Opticians. In 1997, our Woodruff office became part of Carolina Vision Associates when Dr. Sprouse, a Spartanburg native, joined the practice. In 1992 Dr. Fern Powell came back to her hometown of Spartanburg to assist Dr. Shelley with his expanding practice. Dr. Michael Younger joined in 1995 as the practice was continuing to grow, and his wife, Dr. Stephanie Younger, became part of the team in 2004. Gaffney native Dr. Malissa Mathis began seeing patients at our Gaffney location in 1998 soon after she completed optometry school. Our newest addition is Dr. Rachelle Penka, who has been with the practice since 2008.All Carolina Vision Associates' optometrists are board certified and licensed to examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases, injuries and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye. Carolina Vision Associates’ doctors work closely with a variety of other medical professionals to coordinate care for cataracts, LASIK and an assortment of other medical conditions with ocular effects.

December is filled with joy, giving, and celebration - but did you know it’s also a month dedicated to several important eye health observances?

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month! As you’re shopping for loved ones, remember to choose gifts that are safe for their eyes. Some toys can pose a risk to vision, especially for children.

When selecting toys, look for:

•No sharp edges or points
•No small parts that can be easily detached
•No projectiles or flying objects
•Toys labeled as age-appropriate

By choosing safe and fun toys, you can help prevent eye injuries and ensure a happy, healthy holiday season for everyone!

Stay tuned for more eye health awareness topics throughout the month!
