A Step Ahead Foot & Ankle Clinic

A Step Ahead Foot & Ankle Clinic We specialize in total foot care. We treat problems such as heel spurs, bunions, hammer toes, plant Dr Riley has been a podiatrist since 1991.

She became a podiatrist because of problems with her flat feet. While playing basketball at USD she injured her feet. She had to have total reconstructive flat feet surgery when 19 and was in casts and crutches for 6 months. She became a podiatrist because when she was seeking a solution to her foot problems, most doctors didn't know how to treat her flat feet. She was told she had to live with her pain the rest of her life. She changed her major from being a math teacher to pre-med and sought out answers to her own foot problems. Dr. Riley is surgically trained and with over 20 years of experience has done thousands of surgeries. In 2011, out of the need for an over the counter arch support that worked for flat feet, Dr. Riley invented and received a patent on j1 insoles for flat feet. For more information on j1 insoles you can go to www.j1insoles.com
Dr. Riley has been on the other side as a patient and has the compassion and understanding of knowing what foot pain feels like and her patients get the time they deserve. We offer:
*Med spa chairs for people needing nails and callouses trimmed down
* Digital Instant Xray
* Diabetic shoes
* In office surgery
* Nitrous for those who are apprehensive. Dr. Lorri Riley would be happy to treat you and your family. Most insurances accepted without referrals. Medicaid of SD needs a referral as does anyone being transferred from the VA. Unfortunately, Medicaid of Wyoming does not allow coverage for podiatrists.

As one journey ends another begins. Dr. Riley will be looking forward to a new chapter as Dr. Kale Merrell will be taking over full time August 14, 2023 and eventually changing the name to Merrell Foot and Ankle Clinic. Dr. Merrell grew up in Belle Fourche, the son of Kenny and Jacque Merrell who attended Belle Fourche High School with Dr. Riley. Dr. Merrell has been practicing in South Texas but was ready to come back to the Black Hills to be close to his family. He did a 3 year surgical residency in Florida and is board qualified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Merrell’s easy going demeanor and kind heartedness fits right in with the current practice but also brings in expanded surgical training and wound care to the clinic.
Dr. Riley plans to pursue further marketing of j1 insoles, with one patented style being the only insoles on the market made for flat feet. She also wants to bring to market ThinNail, a patented product for treating thick, fungus nails. Dr. Riley has developed strategic partnerships to produce several products, including sandals for flat feet. She is going to miss her employees especially Keri Geist who has been with Dr. Riley for the last 7 years and many of her patients who have become like family.

Patented 3-Point Correction for Flat Feet
🦶Flat feet occur when the arches are falling and the heel and ankles turn in. This process is called pronation. Each person will have a varying degree of how much their foot will pronate depending upon the amount of flexibility in the 3 areas of the foot- the subtalar joint, midfoot and forefoot.
🦶These falling arches are what lead to plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuromas, heel pain, shin splints and knee and back pain

This can happen to all ages!
🦶25% of the population is born with flat feet. Many kids will not necessarily complain about their feet hurting. They sometimes feel that this is how everyone feels and learn to compensate by not being as active, toe walking or turning their feet in and becoming in-toed.
🦶As the arch starts to weaken, another 10-15% of the population will develop flat feet. This means that about 35-40% of the adult population have flat feet.
