Check out this awesome dunk from Kam Davis! 🏀 We have been joining Mandie at the Spearfish High School basketball games as she and Kam savor his senior year! 🎓

Kam unfortunately took a gnarly poke to the eye during this game, but we had Dr. Haivala on call😉 He sure didn’t let it stop him from having an awesome game!

Last week, we shared information about myopia (nearsightedness), and the concerns this raises for eye health in children. This week we want to share some additional information about new lenses we offer at Spearfish Eye Care Center that focus on slowing myopia progression!🤓

Essilor Stellest lenses are the first and only FDA market authorized lenses that slow myopia progression in children. Their studies show Stellest lenses slowed myopia progression an average of 71% over 2 years.

As you can see, the lenses have rings of “lenslets” which defocus the nearsightedness. The child’s glasses prescription falls in between each ring and central area of the lens to correct vision.

We are excited to be offering Stellest to our young patients, and continue to encourage regular eye exams!

Happy Friday! 🤗

Today we want to share some information about myopia (nearsightedness). Myopia is becoming increasingly common among children, especially those with a family history. However, environmental factors are also now known to be a major contribution to myopia progression.

Research suggests that children spending more time indoors and doing more near-focused activities, such as computer work, video games, and reading, have higher rates of myopia compared to children who spend more time outdoors.

Our optometrists are treating children with myopia more often. Recent research surrounding myopia has focused on slowing the progression. These treatments do not necessarily reverse myopia, but are meant to keep it from getting worse and protect overall eye health as the child grows and develops.

pt. 3!

Check out these photos of Dr. Caudill during her optometry school days, pictured with her husband, Jess!💕

Dr. Caudill graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago in 2016. OD school took her on a tour 👀 — from living in an old Chicago opera prop building filled with leftover stage props (very Phantom of the Opera), to Tupelo, MS (Elvis’ birthplace and the peak of her “sharing space with wildlife” era with cockroaches, geckos, ants, and something living in the attic😅), to Daytona Beach, FL — where cockroaches also lived… and should have paid rent! But she also enjoyed amusement parks, sunny beaches, and kayaking with manatees while she was there. She learned a lot about eyes and 10/10 would absolutely do it again… with pest control.😜

Here we have Dr. Tim Robinson during optometry school days pictured with his sister! Dr. Robinson graduated from Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon in 2012.

Did you know? 👀 While in school, Dr. Robinson moved to Hawaii with his wife for an intership program. They lived there for 3 months, enjoying the sunshine, beaches, and lovely weather. His wife was the “house mom” and would rent bicycles to donate their collections of cans for money to buy groceries😜

Dr. Robinson moved to Spearfish in 2021, which is when he started at Spearfish Eye Care Center!

Check out these photos of Dr. Haivala and Bryan in her optometry school days! Dr. Haivala is a proud graduate of Southern California College of Optometry.

She and Bryan got married in 1989 while she was in school. She remembers practicing putting hard contact lenses in his eye and one got stuck! He thought he might die while she tried to get it out 😂 He survived that along with many many dilated eye exams to practice her technique! 😎Apparently he was quite happy with the service, as they’re still married and even work together today!🤓

January is national glaucoma awareness month💚

Glaucoma awareness month was established by the National Eye Institute to encourage education about eye health and provide fundraising for further research.

Annual eye exams with your trusted optometrist are typically the first line of defense when diagnosing and treating glaucoma.

If you or someone you know has been affected by glaucoma, we recognize how life changing this diagnosis can be. We will always inform and educate you if we feel you’re at elevated risk for this disease.
