With advancements in 3D printing and Prosthetics, here is an example of some of the unique things that can be accomplished with 3D. We have printed many prosthetics using 3D technology and are truly amazed by what can be created. Check out this is amazing story based out of Alaska and a team in Idaho coming together to help out an eagle.

Beauty the Bald Eagle likely lost her beak being shot off by poachers in Alaska. The work required meticulous finesse. The first step: taking X-rays of Beauty’s skull and remaining beak. Then the team from Idaho took an impression of what remained of the eagle’s beak in a procedure similar to creating a dental impression for the fitting of a crown. Using these measurements of what Beauty had lost, together with comparative data from the skull of an uninjured female eagle, engineers designed a prototype, 3D printed it, and tried it on Beauty. Making adjustments, they repeated the process until, finally, they had a well-fitting device.

Winter’s prosthetic tail became a symbol of resilience after she lost her natural tail due to injury and was rescued by the team at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Without a tail, she had to swim side to side like a fish, which caused serious strain on her body. To help her move naturally again, a team of veterinarians and prosthetics experts designed a custom silicone-and-gel prosthetic tail that fit over her remaining tail stump. The soft gel liner, specially developed to protect her skin, allowed her to wear the prosthetic comfortably and regain an up-and-down dolphin swimming motion. Her inspiring journey later reached millions through the film Dolphin Tale, showing how innovation, care, and determination gave Winter a new way to swim.
