The Spencer ADA Council’s Universal Design Series, celebrating 35 years of progress under the Americans with Disabilities Act — will be conducted in four sessions at four different locations in Spencer, Monday, Oct. 27. One of the most influential pieces of legislation to come out of Iowa, These sessions are about more than rules and regulations, they center around good design, good business and good community planning.

“Universal Design is about more than ramps and measurements — it’s about dignity, practicality, and caring for our neighbors,” said Molly Wuebker, OTR/L, ODT, ADAC. “Sharing this message here in Spencer means a lot to me personally. I grew up here. This community taught me what it means to work hard, look out for one another, and take pride in what we build. Those same values are what the ADA represents — fairness, opportunity, and a belief that everyone should have a chance to take part in daily life.

We recently recognized three of our longtime council members who recently retired after many years of cheerful service in educating the public about persons with disabilities. Janee Boever, Stevie Shively and Ann Vandehaar were instrumental in presenting a variety of projects from helping to fund the construction of the accessible fishing dock at Stolley's, hosting a variety of guest speakers to the community such as the 2017 visit of Michele Ohmes from Kansas City to Spencer and the hugely popular School Disability Awareness program/poster contest in the 4th grade. The three are pictured receiving certificates of appreciation and gifts from longtime council member Rosie Osterberg.
