What We Do Wednesday: Supporting Our Veterans

Former Chair Bruce Campbell describes it best:
The Veterans Task Force's mission is to partner with local organizations and individuals to help prevent su***de among military service members, veterans, and their families.

Our journey began with the initiative of Jennifer Kelley, the Community Engagement and Partnership Coordinator at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center, who reached out to veterans and health services organizations in this area to initiate the development of Veteran Su***de Prevention coalitions in the community.

This led to our first meeting at the PATH Resource Center, in January 2023, where representatives from various local organizations came together to address the alarming trends in veteran su***de.

We have committed to meeting monthly and working to build a strong coalition. Our efforts are guided by the key tenets that su***de is preventable, requiring community-based strategies, and understanding that everyone has a role to play in su***de prevention.

Now led by Jay Pinsky, the task force is actively planning events and programs to help veterans in our community.

Veterans Day is nearly here, and it’s been heavy on my mind.

Did you know that nearly one in five U.S. veterans report feeling lonely often, and more than half experience loneliness at least some of the time? Research also shows that veterans who struggle with loneliness are up to twelve times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts compared to those who rarely feel lonely (National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, 2020).

Though I am not a mental health practitioner, I am an advocate and have experience in the field. Because of this, I am doing something a little different this week.

If you are a veteran, or have one in your life, bring your veteran by my office for a free sweet treat. We can sit together and chat, or even take a quiet walk on the trail nearby, whatever feels right. Sometimes connection does not require words; it just needs presence.

Check in on the veteran in your life, and if you would like to stop by, send me a quick message so I can get a headcount.

Let’s honor service with connection, peace, and gratitude.

🍁 Join In With Me! 🍁

I’ve started turning my office plant into a gratitude tree for the month of November. I’ll be reusing the Halloween themed notepad outside my office door, and you can too!

Stop by any time and write something you’re grateful for and I’ll add it to the “tree”. We all know what gratitude can do for mood so let’s take charge by doing something as simple as writing it down! Plus, I’d truly love to see what you all come up with. ❤️

My first week of November has greeted me with a virus.

Here’s how I’m choosing to honor what my body needs for wellness:

• Spend at least 20 minutes outside. I’ve noticed this brings almost instant relief.
• Take medication when needed. Living with chronic pain can make things worse, especially when fevers trigger flare-ups.
• Move slowly but stay consistent. If I can’t make the bed all at once, I take a break and come back to it.
• Keep hydrating, even when it feels difficult.
• Speak kindly to myself. I tend to struggle with rest when I’m not being productive, and slowing down is something I’m still learning to embrace.

How has your first week of November been? What are you looking forward to this month?
