❄️ Don't Get Blindsided by the Glare! Protect Your Eyes from Snow Blindness ❄️

Hello, Spirit Lake! While the fresh snow makes our Iowa landscape beautiful, it can pose a hidden risk to your eye health: snow blindness.

What is Snow Blindness?
Snow blindness, or photokeratitis, is essentially a sunburn on your eye's cornea (the clear front surface). It's caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Here's the catch: fresh snow can reflect up to 80% of UV radiation! This means you're getting hit with UV rays from above and below, dramatically increasing your risk—even on cloudy days.

Symptoms can include a gritty or burning sensation, pain, light sensitivity, watery eyes, and temporarily blurred vision. Like a skin sunburn, symptoms often don't appear until several hours after the damage has been done.

How to Protect Your Eyes:
The good news is prevention is easy and highly effective!
1. Wear 100% UV Protection: This is the most crucial step. Always wear sunglasses or snow goggles that block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB rays whenever you are outdoors during the day, especially in snow.
2. Go Wraparound: For the best defense, choose sunglasses or goggles that have a wraparound style or large lenses. This helps block stray UV light that comes in from the sides.
3. Don't Forget the Brim: A wide-brimmed hat or cap can help shield your eyes from overhead light, providing an extra layer of protection.
4. Stay Equipped Year-Round: Remember, this advice isn't just for winter sports! Any prolonged outdoor exposure to reflective surfaces (snow, ice, or even water) requires proper UV eye protection.
