What a magical way to spend Christmas! 🎄❤️
As a student midwife, I had the incredible privilege of attending a peaceful home water birth on Christmas morning. I got the call Christmas Eve around 10pm and headed out into the quiet night—driving through rural Idaho with deer and wildlife crossing the road under the stars. It felt like the perfect prelude to something special.
When I arrived, I joined forces with the amazing .just.alicia (an Idaho midwife I truly admire)and (the other student I work with)Mom was laboring beautifully under the soft glow of Christmas lights, supported every step by her loving husband.
At exactly 3am, sweet baby girl Lucy Joy made her entrance into the world—in the water, calm and wide-eyed. She didn’t cry at all; she just gazed around the room in pure awe, taking it all in. It took some gentle encouragement from Alicia and me to remind her to take those first breaths—she finally did, with the most adorable “glare” like she was mildly annoyed we were interrupting her wonder! 😍 No dramatic cries, just peaceful, steady breathing.
Mom was an absolute powerhouse, and Dad beamed with pride as they welcomed their perfect Christmas gift. Watching them snuggle up in bed with their newest bundle was just the sweetest.
Home birth magic at its finest—grateful to be part of such a sacred moment. Welcome to the world, little Lucy Joy! 🌟

This year has been filled with an abundance of positive experiences, and I am deeply grateful for each one. One of the highlights has been working with a new preceptor, which has been a valuable learning experience. I have also appreciated the opportunity to work alongside other midwives, who share my passion for supporting families during the birth process. On a personal level, I am thankful for the love and support of my family, who have been my rock during difficult times. My friendships have also been a source of comfort and strength. As I reflect on my role as a student midwife, I am filled with gratitude for the privilege of being present in the birth spaces of families as they welcome new life into their worlds.

Here is my cutest turkey of my clan. Friendly reminder to all to drive safe this holiday and if you plan on conceiving a turkey of your own- you would be due early September

Researchers have found something remarkable, babies who received only colostrum in their first 72 hours of life were five times less likely to develop a peanut allergy, and eleven times less likely to develop multiple food allergies.

This study matters so much because it confirms that how we feed our babies in those first few days truly matters. Those first drops of milk aren’t just important, they’re powerful, protective, and packed with lifelong benefits.

Did you feel supported to give your baby just colostrum in those first few days?

And as always, you’re allowed to feel proud of every single drop of breastmilk you gave your baby 💛

Did my first breech without borders training today. That was a day well spent, I tell you. Breeches happen and good outcomes happen more often with skilled providers. I feel so much more prepared after taking this course.

I did my first primary birth today! The sweet baby was born en caul, meaning she was born in the amniotic sac. I have always wanted to see that but it only happens 1in 80,000 births! I may never see it again. I really really need to write this stuff down- I doubt I would ever forget anyway. I didn’t have any hands for photos so I got this one off Google. Photographer unknown. So special

Newborn feet are not only charming but also provide valuable insights for medical professionals. Midwives can evaluate gestational age by examining the characteristics of a newborn’s feet. Additionally, during a newborn physical assessment, midwives test the Babinski reflex, where the toes fan out, particularly the big toe, and the plantar grasp reflex, which involves the toes curling inward, to ensure proper neurological development.
