In Honoring Memory of Dr. Alex Shikhman, MD, PhD

Today would have been a celebration of your birthday — and though you are no longer with us, your legacy continues to shape the way I care for patients every single day.

Dr. Shikhman was a pioneer in integrative rheumatology and chronic illness care, blending scientific rigor with compassion for those who had too often been dismissed by conventional medicine. His work spanned decades of groundbreaking research and clinical practice, from autoimmune mechanisms to practical care strategies for complex, infection-associated conditions.

As the founder of the Institute for Specialized Medicine, he created a space where patients with chronic Lyme disease, autoimmune disease, and inflammatory conditions could receive comprehensive, individualized care when so few clinicians were willing or able to offer it. His willingness to treat the most challenging cases — with curiosity, thoroughness, and respect — provided validation and hope to so many who felt unheard.

Dr. Shikhman taught me not just clinical skills, but the value of listening deeply to patients, thinking beyond standard protocols, and blending evidence-based science with thoughtful, integrative approaches. Much of the clinical framework I use in my practice today — especially in serving patients with overlapping chronic infections, autoimmune, and autoinflammatory conditions — is rooted in what he entrusted to me as my first post-graduate mentor.

Your legacy lives on in the patients we serve, the lives you touched, and the standards of care you helped redefine. Thank you for your guidance, your wisdom, and your unwavering dedication to complex, compassionate medicine.

Forever grateful, always inspired. 🕊️

❄️ Even the Dreary Days Hold Wonder

Late winter can feel heavy — muted skies, bare trees, slow mornings, and the quiet stretch between seasons. But a gray day does not have to be an empty one.

Adventure doesn’t always mean big plans or perfect weather. Sometimes it’s a walk in cold air, noticing how light filters through clouds, or letting the stillness sharpen your awareness of the world around you. There is beauty in this season if we’re willing to meet it where it is.

Each day is a gift. Not every day will feel vibrant or easy, but every day offers something worth noticing. A breath. A view. A moment of presence. A reminder that we are here now.

Enjoy every season. Step outside when you can. And don’t take a single day for granted.

Medicine works best when it is practiced with discernment, humility, and respect for timing.

As a naturopathic physician, I practice within the Therapeutic Order—not as a rigid hierarchy, but as a clinical framework that reminds us to choose the least force necessary while still being effective. Sometimes that means food, sleep, movement, connection, and restoring rhythm. Sometimes it means botanicals, nutrients, or lifestyle therapeutics. And sometimes, very appropriately, it means prescription medications, procedures, or urgent interventions. Integrative medicine is not anti-pharmaceutical—it is pro-appropriateness.

At its core, this approach asks better questions:
What does this person need right now?
What will stabilize, support, and restore without suppressing the body’s capacity to heal?
What interventions move us toward resilience rather than dependency?

Regenerative medicine does not stop at supplements or protocols. It extends into regenerative living. How we eat, grow food, share meals, build community, and engage in fellowship matters deeply to immune regulation, metabolic health, cancer risk, autoimmunity, and recovery from chronic infections. Homesteading principles, even when practiced imperfectly, reconnect us to seasonality, nutrient density, movement, sunlight, and purpose. Community buffers stress biology. Fellowship changes inflammatory tone. These are not soft concepts—they are biologically active inputs.

In clinical practice—whether addressing primary care concerns, autoimmunity, integrative oncology, or complex chronic infections like Lyme, mold illness, or EBV—the goal is not to choose between “natural” and “conventional.” The goal is to integrate wisely. To escalate when needed. To de-escalate when possible. And to never forget that the terrain matters as much as the trigger.

True integrative care honors science, respects tradition, and stays grounded in the lived reality of patients. Healing is not about ideology. It is about stewardship—of the body, the community, and the environment that sustains us all.

🟣 In Loving Memory of My Aunt — Raising Awareness for Pancreatic Cancer 🟣

Today I honor the memory of my late aunt, who faced pancreatic cancer with courage and grace. This disease is often silent until it has advanced, making awareness and education so important.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most challenging cancers to detect early because it often causes no noticeable symptoms in its earliest stages. When symptoms do appear, they can include unintended weight loss, abdominal or back pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), nausea, and vomiting — but these signs typically emerge after the disease has progressed.

Although pancreatic cancer occurs in both men and women, recent research continues to show concerning trends in risk factors such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and chronic inflammation. One study linked new-onset type 2 diabetes with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in women, underscoring the importance of metabolic health in overall cancer risk profiles.

Because there is currently no recommended routine screening test for average-risk individuals in the general population, awareness of symptoms and risk factors is essential. Screening is typically reserved for those at high risk due to family history or genetic predisposition.

Evidence-informed practices that may help support prevention include maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding to***co use, moderating alcohol consumption, supporting metabolic health, and addressing chronic inflammation through diet, movement, and comprehensive care. While none of these guarantees prevention, they align with broader strategies that reduce risk across multiple chronic diseases.

My aunt’s journey reminds me every day why informed, compassionate care and attentive listening to one’s body matter. Let this be a reminder to advocate for your health, notice subtle changes, and support research focused on better early detection and outcomes for pancreatic cancer.

If this resonates with you, please share, save, or tag someone who might benefit from this awareness.

A Better January Reset

If your New Year reset hasn’t led to meaningful improvement, you are not doing anything wrong.

January doesn’t need stricter diets or harsher cleanses—it’s an ideal time for strategic reassessment.

When the true drivers of inflammation are identified, nutrition finally works the way it’s intended to.
