Airline Water May Not Be a Safe Option for Passengers and Crew.

Testing of more than 35,000 water samples collected from both major and regional airlines identified coliform bacteria in nearly 1,000 samples and E. coli in 32 samples. The findings reveal that federal standards for aircraft water safety are inconsistently met, posing potential health risks to passengers and crew. Travelers are advised to drink only sealed bottled water and avoid onboard coffee or tea.

Wearable Sleeve May Detect Frailty Early in Seniors.

Researchers at the University of Arizona have developed a mesh sleeve worn on the lower thigh that measures leg acceleration, gait symmetry, and step variability to help detect early signs of frailty in older adults. Wearable technologies like this may enable earlier identification and treatment of frailty, potentially reducing the risk of falls and hospitalizations that can negatively affect independence, quality of life, and longevity.

Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Higher Mortality Risk in Cancer Survivors.

Among 802 cancer survivors, researchers found that individuals with the highest intake of ultra-processed foods—industrially formulated products often high in added sugars, fats, and salt—had a 48% higher risk of mortality over the following 15 years compared with those consuming fewer processed foods. This association persisted even after adjusting for overall diet quality. The findings suggest that factors associated with industrial food processing, such as inflammation and metabolic disruption, may independently contribute to poorer long-term outcomes.

Poor Fitness and Sleep Nearly Double Heart Risks in Seniors.

Using data from the UK Biobank study, researchers found that a low daily step count (fewer than 7,500 steps) combined with sleeping fewer than 6.5 hours per night at age 62 was associated with an 84% higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events—such as heart attack or stroke—during the following eight years.

Manual Therapies May Improve Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome Treatment Outcomes.

In patients receiving treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome, a recent study found that combining strength-building exercises with hip and knee mobilization and soft-tissue therapies was associated with greater improvements in pain and function than exercises alone. Doctors of chiropractic commonly integrate manual therapies with therapeutic exercises when managing musculoskeletal disorders, including patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Secondhand Smoke Increases Cardiometabolic Risks.

Using data from the STEPS survey, researchers found that regular exposure to secondhand smoke at home or work is associated with higher risk of several cardiometabolic conditions, including high blood pressure (13%), metabolic syndrome (12%), high cholesterol (18%), and diabetes (16%). Exposure in both settings—at home and at work—nearly doubles the risk for these conditions.
