It’s Transformation Tuesday! Here is a photo of a patient with a sizeable left thoracolumbar curve that was causing lower back pain and making work hard. The photo on the left is her initial evaluation and the photo on the right was her soft discharge with home program after 6 weeks of SSE training. Both photos are her resting posture, meaning that she is not correcting her posture at all. She is standing in a relaxed position on her first day and her last day. Even without correction, you can see improved opening along the right side of her body and her ability to handle the compression from gravity through her spine, decreasing the collapse into her curve. I could have her correct and give you a really perfect picture but…day to day is what we want.

Not pictured is the ability for her to work a full shift (a few days in a row) or sit in the car for long periods of time without pain for the first time in years.

If you’re wanting to reduce your pain and improve your postural balance - give us a call!

Scoliosis seems to be something that is talked about but not really known about. A lot of people "have it" but not many people know what to do about it or for it. Let's start this month of learning with the basics.

Scoliosis is, by definition, a lateral (left or right) curvature of the spine that is larger than 10 degrees. Anything less than 10 degrees is considered a spinal asymmetry. Scoliotic curves typically have either an "S" shape or a "C" shape.

Scoliosis can be diagnosed at any age but is typically diagnosed in adolescence. It could be a result of a vertebra that was not formed correctly, a complication of a neurological condition (CP, spina bifida, muscular dystrophies, etc.) or from asymmetrical growth that occurs during one of the childhood growth spurts.

If scoliosis develops later in life, it could be from a traumatic injury, a fracture related to osteopenia/osteoporosis, or a specific type of degenerative scoliosis known as de novo scoliosis.

The etiology of your curve will drive the treatment that is provided to you. Here at Realign Spine, we look at your clinical (in-person) presentation, as well as your radiological (x-ray) presentation. We also take a detailed health history to better understand the driving force behind your curve so we can better customize your treatment plan.

If you're interested in treatment - give us a call! We know curves and we know how to help..
