Many women with lipedema are told they have “water swelling” in their legs, but true lymphedema is actually uncommon in lipedema. The swelling and disproportionate size of the legs are frequently misdiagnosed as lymphedema, leading to frustration and ineffective treatment.
Unlike lymphedema, the “swelling” seen in lipedema is not caused by fluid. That’s why:
• Diuretics (“water pills”) don’t help
• Leg size doesn’t change much with elevation or position
• The enlargement is due to persistent, abnormal fat cells, not fluid buildup
Understanding this difference is critical to getting the right diagnosis and care. If you’ve been told you have lymphedema but treatments aren’t working, it may be time to ask more questions.
Accurate information leads to better outcomes and hope.
