What if…
What if the things you believe about yourself and what you can and cannot do aren’t actually true?
What if the things people told you when you were young about what you can and cannot do aren’t actually true?
What if athleticism isn’t limited to only those who participated in high school and college sports?
What if there is - and always has been - an athlete within you just waiting for the opportunity to make itself known?
What if you showed up unsure, nervous, a bit apprehensive, curious, and maybe even a little hopeful?
What might you discover is actually possible?

We’ve made it to the final installment of our AM and PM Bookend series! So much of life is unpredictable and ever-changing. Bookends allow us to build predictability and routine into the start and end of our day. Rounding out our PM Bookend ideas are some of the same components we have folded into our AM Bookend. Deep breathing, light stretching, meditation/prayer, and journaling can all contribute to a quality night sleep. We’re also gonna borrow from your kids’ bedtime routine. Taking a bath, reading a story, and connection set your kiddo up for a smooth bedtime. Showering or washing your face, reading a book, and connection can be great additions to your PM Bookend. Our lists of ideas for both your AM and PM Bookends are by no means exhaustive but they give you a great place to begin putting together a line up that works for you. Being intentional about the start and end of your day has the ability to impact your entire day (and night). If we missed any of your favorite parts to you bookends drop them in your comments so others can give them a try!

Most of us are familiar with the importance of 7-8 hours of sleep, but even if we have the time to commit to it, quality sleep is no guarantee. When our bodies are used to falling asleep from sheer exhaustion, a consistent sleep schedule and routine can prove challenging. So what can we do to help our bodies adjust to a new approach? In addition to the environmental cues we covered yesterday, we can be intentional about inputs before bedtime that can negatively impact our efforts. It’s best to avoid caffeine 6 to 8 hours before you lay down. Turn off screens with blue light (or wear blue light glasses) an hour before lights out to avoid sending mixed signals to your sleep clock. A light snack before bed can be disruptive to some but helpful to others so try out different fasting windows to sort what works for you and your PM Bookend. Tune in tomorrow when we wrap up our AM and PM Bookend series with some final additions to our evening bookend. Sleep well!

Welcome back to our Bookend series! This week is all about how we end our day and set ourselves up for a great night sleep and our best start to the day. Wrapping up our day can often feel hurried and rushed. Kids’ bedtimes, late night work emails and the scrolling that got away from us can all leave us falling asleep way later than we intended. An effective PM bookend requires we be intentional if we want to prevent distractions and find consistency. To set the tone, we are gonna start with being intentional about our environment. An hour before you plan to climb in bed, begin dimming the lights and turn the thermostat down a bit. You can even turn on some soothing music in the background. Creating environmental cues that signal to your body and brain that it’s time to begin winding down can also help cue little ones that wake back up that it’s bedtime for everyone in the house. Reducing the amount of stimulus can also begin quieting the mind, even as we work through the rest of our PM Bookend. Come back this week to uncover core components you can fold into your nighttime routine!

Good morning! We’re wrapping up our AM Bookend with three more potential adds to your morning line-up. To date, we’ve covered rehydration, deep breathing and movement. Scroll back for detailed posts and more info. In addition to those three, consider including:

* Sunlight - We’re likely all familiar with sunlight as a direct source for Vitamin D, but just 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight in the morning can help regulate your body clock and boost serotonin levels, which can equate to more energy and increased ability to focus. It can be tricky if you rise before the sun does. Just aim for fitting in 5-10 minutes within the first hour or two of the sun rising. And don’t let those cloudy and overcast days fool you. The benefits may take a few more minutes of exposure to be realized but the light on a cloudy day can still have an impact. More importantly, skipping days can prove disruptive to building a habit so stay consistent if you include it in the mix.

* Meditation - Whether you use guided meditations, wrap it into your box breathing, or choose a method of sitting quietly that is specific to your faith practice like prayer, setting time aside where you quiet your mind can improve mental clarity, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase focus and concentration.

* Journaling - Whether you focus on gratitude, doing a “brain dump” where you jot down everything on your mind to quiet your thoughts, or simply record learning, wins, or memories that you don’t want to forget, the act of journaling can prove beneficial in the morning and prior to falling asleep. It’s why we’ve placed it at the end of our list. Some choose to include it in their AM Bookend, while others prefer it in their PM Bookend.

And now it’s go time! Use this week’s line up to customize your AM Bookend. If you’re just getting started, pick 2 or 3 to start with and add others in once the first couple are consistent and established. And check back in next week for our PM Bookend series as we look at what we can do to set us up for a great night’s rest and best position us to take on our morning.

Our AM Bookend review is well underway and we have made it to MOVEMENT! We definitely love us some movement here at CoreFit but when it comes to your AM Bookend we aren’t talking about a full workout. What we are talking about is a few minutes of intentional, full body movement to get your blood flowing, remove any stiffness, and boost your energy and focus. Morning movement can take a whole number of forms - from slow, intentional movements like cat-cow stretches, good mornings and child’s pose, to movements with more intensity like push ups, squats and lunges. Choosing movements that you enjoy will go a long ways in you successfully building the habit and sustaining it over time. Play around with it until you find that handful of movements that you enjoy and leave you feeling ready for your day. You can even invite your kids into this one! Feel free to check in with any of our coaches during class or reach out by phone or DM if you’re looking for ideas or feedback. See you back here tomorrow for another great add to consider as you build your AM Bookend!

Welcome back to our AM Bookend buffet as we add deep breathing to our line up. Deep breathing as a tool to self-regulate or calm yourself in stressful situations is becoming more mainstream. But deep breathing can also be done proactively. Taking deep breaths after waking in the morning boosts oxygen levels in your blood and clears some of that morning brain fog, leaving you more awake and alert. It will also activate your parasympathetic nervous system which can lower stress levels before you take on the day. Don’t wait for a heightened state to capitalize on all the benefits of deep breathing. Build deep breathing into your regular routine. Unsure how to begin? Box breathing is an easy to remember first step. Inhale, hold, exhale, hold - all for a count of 4 - and begin again. It generally only takes 3-4 cycles of box breathing to reap a good number of the benefits but you can deep breathe for any length of time. State is a deep breathing app that many CoreFit members use and enjoy. The app offers different types of breathing exercises for different needs - wake up, feel alert, feel calm, fall asleep - and provides simple auditory and visual cues. However you go about it, consider adding some deep breaths to your morning line up. It’s free, simple and as quick as you choose to make it. Come back tomorrow for another AM Bookend add!

Good morning! The right habits have the ability to help turn a not so great morning into a good one. Welcome to our buffet of AM bookend options we’ll be exploring this week. We’re gonna start off with an easy and quick one - rehydration! A solid stretch of sleep at night means you don’t take any water in for a similar stretch of time. Drinking 8oz of water right out of the gate can start the benefits of good hydration rolling in, from your energy to your cognition, mood and metabolism. If a glass of cold water feels shocking, leave it on your bedside table so it’s at room temp come morning or warm it up. How ever you prefer it, consider folding in a glass of water into your morning routine. Tune back in tomorrow for another great addition to your AM bookend line-up!
