Goal support groups offer significant mental health benefits by reducing isolation, boosting self-esteem, providing accountability, and teaching new coping skills through shared experiences, validation, and peer encouragement, creating a powerful sense of belonging and hope as members work toward common objectives.
Key Mental Health Benefits:
• Reduces Isolation & Fosters Connection: Sharing struggles with others who understand creates a strong sense of belonging, combating loneliness and confirming you're not alone.
• Empowerment & Self-Efficacy: Witnessing others' progress and achieving small wins builds belief in your own strength, increasing confidence and control over your mental health journey.
• Hope & Motivation: Seeing positive role models and tangible progress from peers instills hope and provides motivation to continue working towards your own future goals.
• Accountability: Group members keep each other on track by checking in on goals, which is a powerful motivator for consistent effort.
• New Perspectives & Skills: You learn from others' diverse strategies and insights, gaining new coping mechanisms and a deeper understanding of your own patterns and needs.
• Safe Space for Expression: Groups offer a confidential, non-judgmental place to voice thoughts, feelings, and fears, releasing emotional burdens.
• Sense of Purpose: Helping others within the group boosts self-esteem and provides personal satisfaction, reinforcing your own value.
• Stress Reduction: The combination of emotional support, validation, and practical strategies helps lower overall distress and discomfort.
By providing a dynamic, relational environment, these groups augment individual healing, offering wisdom, empathy, and a collective path toward healthier living and goal achievement

Crochet and knitting groups offer significant mental health benefits by combining the meditative, stress-reducing effects of repetitive crafting (lowering cortisol, boosting serotonin) with the powerful social connection, sense of accomplishment, and shared support found in a community, which combats loneliness, builds self-esteem, and provides a positive outlet for anxiety and depression. These activities create a "flow state," improve focus, and offer creative expression, making them a holistic tool for well-being, especially when done together.

Mental Health Benefits (Individual)
• Stress & Anxiety Reduction: Repetitive motions induce a meditative state, slowing the nervous system and reducing stress hormones (cortisol).
• Mood Enhancement: Stimulates serotonin release, promoting feelings of calmness, happiness, and contentment.
• Improved Focus & Cognition: Requires concentration, improves attention, and builds new neural pathways, potentially delaying cognitive decline.
• Sense of Purpose & Accomplishment: Completing projects provides satisfaction, builds self-esteem, and offers a way to create and give to others.
• Mindfulness: Helps you focus on the present moment, distracting from worries and repetitive negative thoughts.
• Coping Mechanism: Provides a productive outlet for managing symptoms of anxiety, OCD, and even PTSD.
Group Benefits (Social & Emotional)
• Combats Loneliness: Offers a built-in community and social interaction, a key determinant of health.
• Supportive Environment: Creates a nurturing space to share skills, patterns, and stories.
• Shared Accomplishment: Working alongside others magnifies the joy and pride in finished items, whether for self or charity.
• Skill Building: Learning and teaching together fosters a collective sense of growth and competence.
How Groups Enhance Benefits
• Encourages Consistency: The group setting provides accountability and motivation to keep crafting.
• Provides Creative Inspiration: Seeing others' projects sparks new ideas and challenges.
• Reduces Barriers: Makes it easier to pick up the hobby and stick with it, as you're surrounded by like-minded people.

The Spokane VA is pleased to welcome Vitalant Blood Services back on campus for today's blood drive at Mann-Grandstaff VAMC. Open now until 3 PM, we invite Veterans, staff, and guests to donate blood. The warm and comfortable blood-mobile is stationed beneath the campus flagpole in front of the hospital building. Among the donors onboard with the Vitalant team is Marine Corps Veteran Raymond, a regular donor who fondly recalls his favorite duty station in Okinawa, Japan. As is common at the VA, Veterans engage in conversations with one another. Raymond is seated next to David, a retired USAF crew chief whose favorite assignment was working on the B-2 Stealth Bomber. These two distinguished Veterans exemplify the spirit of service, continuing to give by taking time to donate blood. We extend our gratitude to all who participate and thank you for choosing VA!
