03/06/2026

On March 4, 2026, during a hearing on the floor of the Washington State Senate, Senator Leonard Christian (District 4 - Spokane Valley) used language that included the R-word. This term is widely recognized as a harmful and outdated slur toward people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

At The Arc of Spokane, we believe words matter. Language shapes attitudes, and attitudes shape how our community treats people with disabilities. The R-word has a long history of being used to demean and exclude individuals with IDD. For many families and self-advocates, hearing it used in public discourse is painful and discouraging.

Our organization works every day to promote respect, inclusion, and dignity for people with IDD across Spokane and throughout Washington. We expect our public leaders to model that same commitment.

We are disappointed that an elected official used this language and we encourage all public leaders to be mindful of the impact of their words. Choosing to not use the R-word is not about being "polite." It is about recognizing the humanity of people with IDD and treating them with the dignity every person deserves. Respectful language is a basic but powerful way to affirm that people with disabilities belong in every part of our community.

The Arc of Spokane will continue working alongside families, self-advocates, and community partners to build a community where people with IDD are valued and treated with the respect they deserve.

Community inclusion grows when local businesses and neighbors choose every day actions that welcome people with IDD. The Arc of Spokane is grateful to longtime partners Indaba Coffee, Maple Street Bistro, and Fortunata for joining us in building this culture step-by-step.

Their daily choices of greeting people by name, creating accessible spaces, and valuing each person's voice, help our entire community feel connected and seen.

Make sure to visit one of their locations during DD Awareness Month!

HISTORY of the Arc

Until only a few decades ago people with developmental disabilities had little opportunity for personal, social or economic growth. But in the 1950s caring citizens across the country banded together in an effort to change that. They created an organization with the purpose of reversing the social conventions that marginalized those with differing abilities. That organization eventually became The Arc. Over the years committed volunteers in Spokane, throughout Washington State and across the nation have worked to build a better world for people with developmental disabilities. Our achievements are remarkable and include:

  • Helping make public education available to children with developmental disabilities

  • Helping thousands of adults with developmental disabilites succeed in the workplace
