We’re grateful for the strong partnerships that make justice and healing possible for child victims in our community.

Thank you to Airway Heights Police Department for dedication. Together, we ensure children and families are heard, supported, and protected.

JURY FINDS MAN GUILTY IN CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CASE

A two-week trial came to an end Monday in Spokane Superior Court after a jury found a former Airway Heights man guilty of eight crimes of sexual abuse against children: one count of Attempted R**e of a Child in the Second Degree, four counts of Child Molestation in the First Degree, and three counts of Child Molestation in the Second Degree.

Brigham W. Van Wormer, 41, was originally arrested in July 2023 after an investigation was conducted by Airway Heights Police Detective Erin Johnson into allegations that he sexually abused the three children of the woman he was in a dating relationship with for nearly five years.

Van Wormer pled not guilty and was free on bail pending the trial, which began earlier this month.

He is currently being held in the Spokane County Jail pending sentencing set for October 30th.

The successful outcome of this case would not have been possible without the victims coming forward or our partnerships with Partners With Families and Children Child Advocacy Center, West Plains Victim Services, and the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office.

At Partners with Families and Children, we hear many stories from the young people who walk through our doors. Far too often, those stories include struggles with mental health—a challenge that affects not only the child, but their entire family. According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 1 in 5 children aged 3 to 17 (21%) have been diagnosed with a mental, emotional, or behavioral health condition.

Because mental health—like all health—is essential, we believe it deserves the same attention and care. At our Children's Advocacy Center, we ensure the right tools are in place to help. One of the most critical supports we provide to children who come to our center is immediate, on-site mental health care. We meet children right where they are —providing immediate support in the moment and helping them take the first steps toward healing.

The trauma of child abuse goes far beyond the moment it happens. It robs children of their sense of safety and trust in the world and damages the relationships they depend on most.

Left untreated, the effects can follow them for a lifetime:

Ā· Mental health struggles — depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms

Ā· Behavioral changes — substance use, risky behaviors, or even violence toward themselves or others

Ā· Physical health issues — infections, injuries, and higher risks for chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes later in life

At Partners with Families & Children, we are here to break this cycle of trauma by surrounding children and families with the care, compassion and one-of-a kind services they can’t find anywhere else.
