HireAbility Spokane

HireAbility Spokane HireAbility Spokane connects employers with individuals who have a disabilities who are seeking employment and capable of making a difference.

Hire Ability Spokane originated in 2004 when Hire Ability Day was created to provide individuals with disabilities on-the-job experiences and bring together the Spokane community for a luncheon to learn about the advantages of hiring people with disabilities. After 10 successful luncheons, the organization formed a new strategic plan to work directly with businesses and organizations to provide education, support and assistance in connecting with capable, skilled individuals with disabilities seeking careers. Our work is not about charity. It is about diversifying our workforce, helping businesses find employment solutions that will impact their bottom line, and providing quality, professional-wage jobs for a largely untapped workforce.

If your job description reads like this:
❌ “Must lift 50 lbs” (but never actually does)
❌ “Fast-paced environment” (translation: understaffed)
❌ “Must be able to…” everything

You might be unintentionally screening out qualified candidates before they even apply. 👀

Pro tip: list what’s essential, not everything someone might do once a year. You’ll get better applicants. Promise.

Jason has a very specific way of describing his disability — and it definitely gets people’s attention.

He jokes that if he were a neurosurgeon, all his patients would have to be terminal.

His humor might catch you off guard at first — but that’s part of what makes it so powerful. It challenges discomfort and opens the door for honest conversation.

At HireAbility Spokane, we believe people with disabilities get to define their own stories — including how they talk about them.

Inclusion means listening, respecting, and sometimes laughing together. 💙

We may say “disability” a lot around here… and Jason definitely noticed. 😂

During filming, he joked that maybe we should take a shot every time we say it. (Don’t worry — we didn’t!)

But honestly? Conversations about disability shouldn’t feel stiff or uncomfortable. They can be honest, funny, and real — just like this moment.

At HireAbility Spokane, we’re proud to create space for those conversations and to support inclusive workplaces throughout our community. 💙

If you believe in opportunity for everyone, we’d love for you to follow along and share.

When we talk about disability, we often focus on visible challenges.

But what about the challenges people don’t see?

In this clip, Jason shares what it’s really like to navigate daily life with a disability — including the impact of assumptions and underestimation.

Conversations like this help us build a more understanding and inclusive Spokane. 💙

At HireAbility Spokane, we believe awareness leads to opportunity — especially in the workplace.

“No one wants to work anymore” is usually code for “we’re hiring the same way we did in 2009.” 🫣

Spokane has talented, motivated job seekers—including people with disabilities—who do want to work. But if your application takes 45 minutes, includes unnecessary requirements, or filters people out before they get a chance? They’re moving on.

Sometimes the hiring problem isn’t the labor market. It’s the process.

(Good news: fixing it is easier than you think.)

Too often, people assume that disability means “less than.”

Jason created Unreserved to challenge that idea — to show that even if his approach to life looks different, his human experience is the same as anyone else’s. 💛

This is what representation looks like.

Above him, bold yellow text reads, “How do you feel about the way media portrays disability?” A stylized hand points toward a retro television with colorful static, symbolizing media representation. The word “UNRESERVED” appears in the bottom corner.

Accessibility isn’t a hurdle; it’s a business advantage. ✔️
Let’s stop treating inclusion like extra credit. 😅 It’s just good leadership! And, how about that ROI making your workplace open to all job seekers? 🤩

Accessibility isn’t just about having door buttons — it’s about using common sense when designing spaces. 🚪♿

If someone has to struggle to reach a button, it wasn’t placed thoughtfully.
And if you see someone struggling? Don’t be afraid to ask if they’d like help.

Small moments matter.
