This week, we're learning about speech sound development! 🧠
As children learn language, they must learn to synchronize movements of their articulators (tongue, jaw, teeth, lips, and palate) in order to produce complex speech sound combinations. This complex cognitive process often leads to the simplification of speech sounds as skills are developed.
Phonological processes are the predictable patterns of speech errors used by typically developing children to simplify their speech as they learn to talk. In typical language development, most sounds are acquired by about age 5. 🤯
Fun fact: Phonological processes exist in other languages, too! 💬
