The transition period—defined as approximately three weeks before calving through three weeks after—represents the most critical phase in a cow’s lactation. While it accounts for less than 10% of the lactation cycle, it sets the stage for cow health, fertility, and lactation performance. Transition period management and nutrition should be invested in to reap returns for the next 300 days of lactation.
