📸 HISTORIC PHOTO OF THE MONTH: This month’s historic photo is of the old SHG&HS Community Day Parade Float in 1999. Many of you might know Ann Russell, who is a beloved frequent guest at our monthly gatherings! (The below history was written by Benny Jett, President of the SHH&GS.)

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, the Spring Hill Genealogy & Historical Society (SHG&HS) was active in the city. Led by Patricia (Spears) Himburg Thomas, the society mainly focused on genealogical research. Spring Hill used to have a parade every year for Community Day, and in 1999, the society had a float in it. Pictured here is Ann Russell, in a calico dress and bonnet, and her husband Bobby Russell, in a leather jacket and coonskin cap. Dressed in “old timey” clothes, Ann and Bobby were on the parade float and supported the society. Bobby passed away in 2019, and Ann is a beloved frequent guest at the SHH&GS monthly gatherings.

It was an absolute honor to receive the Mary Desha Medal for Youth yesterday from the DAR! Thank you so much to my family, friends, neighbors, politicians, etc. who attended the ceremony at City Hall last night. Here are a few photos from the ceremony taken by Lucas Wright!

Our chapter was honored to recognize Benny Jett who truly reflect the spirit of Mary Desha — patriotism, service, leadership, and love of country. He represented the very best of the next generation, and it was inspiring to hear about his accomplishments and the ways they are already making a difference in our community.

From the heartfelt introductions to the proud smiles of family members, the entire program was filled with encouragement and joy.

Programs like the Mary Desha Youth Award remind us why investing in young people matters so much.

The future is bright — and it was shining at the Benny Jett celebration!
