April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. During a regular exam, dentists will ask about changes in medical history and whether a patient has any new or unusual symptoms. Next, they will check that patient's lips, cheek lining, gums, tongue (front and back), the floor and roof of the mouth, throat, tonsils and the area where the tongue meets the bottom of the mouth. The jaw and neck will be examined for lumps or unusual signs.
Dental checkups can save lives by detecting oral cancer early. That's another good reason to see a dentist regularly for a thorough dental exam.
