If cold weather has you feeling extra stiff or achy, you’re definitely not imagining it. Here’s what’s going on:
❄ Muscles Tighten Up In The Cold
When it’s chilly, your body tries to keep you warm by tensing your muscles. That “protective mode” can make everything feel sore or stiff.
❄ Blood Flow Slows Down
Cold temps make your blood vessels narrow, which means your muscles and joints don’t get as much warm, oxygen-rich blood—less circulation = more ache.
❄ Joints Don’t Glide As Easily
The fluid inside your joints gets a little thicker when it’s cold, so your knees, hips, and shoulders might feel extra creaky or stiff.
❄ Nerves Can Be More Sensitive
When a cold front comes through, the pressure drop can make tissues swell just a bit — enough to irritate sensitive spots or old injuries.
❄ Less Movement
Short days and cold mornings don’t exactly inspire us to be active. More sitting means tighter muscles and more discomfort.
The good news: massage helps counter all of this by improving circulation, loosening tight tissues, and keeping your body moving well through the colder months.
If the weather is making everything feel a little extra “creaky,” you’re not alone — and you don’t have to push through it. Your next session might help more than you realize.
