Focused Friday✨ where we bring you recommended self-help books written by professionals in the field!

The quest for perfection is exhausting and unrelenting. There is a constant barrage of social expectations that teach us that being imperfect is synonymous with being inadequate. Everywhere we turn, there are messages that tell us who, what and how we’re supposed to be. So, we learn to hide our struggles and protect ourselves from shame, judgment, criticism and blame by seeking safety in pretending and perfection.

Based on seven years of her ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses; they are powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that we’re all in this together.

Brown writes, “We need our lives back. It’s time to reclaim the gifts of imperfection—the courage to be real, the compassion we need to love ourselves and others, and the connection that gives true purpose and meaning to life. These are the gifts that bring love, laughter, gratitude, empathy and joy into our lives.”

The go-to guide for dealing with the narcissist in your life—now fully revised and updated based on reader feedback!
Do you know someone who is overly arrogant, shows an extreme lack of empathy, or exhibits an inflated sense of entitlement? Do they exploit others, or engage in deluded thinking? These are all traits of narcissistic personality disorder, and when it comes to dealing with narcissists, it can be difficult to get your point across. So, how do you handle the narcissistic people in your life? You might interact with them in social or professional settings, and you might even love one—so ignoring them isn’t really a practical solution. They’re frustrating, and maybe even intimidating, but ultimately, you need to find a way of communicating effectively with them.
Now a self-help classic, Disarming the Narcissist is a practical, step-by-step communication guide to help you cope with and confront the narcissist in your life. Based on reader feedback, this fully revised and updated third edition features new information on shame, hypersexuality, and infidelity in narcissism; legal information to help you if you are divorcing a narcissist; and the impact of narcissism on children.
With this how-to guide, you’ll learn how to separate yourself from a narcissist’s traps, and gain the respect and validation you deserve—while side-stepping unproductive power struggles and senseless arguments with someone who is at the center of his or her own universe. Finally, you’ll learn how to set limits with your narcissist and when it’s time to draw the line on unacceptable behavior.

Mental Health Monday: Together We Heal ✨

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to focus on the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities. By raising awareness and understanding, we can support each other in seeking the help we deserve.

Did you know? ✨
- African Americans are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population, yet they are less likely to seek treatment.
- Latinx individuals are less likely to receive mental health care, with only 36% of those experiencing mental health issues seeking help.
- Native American and Alaskan Native communities have the highest su***de rates of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S.
- Nearly half of multiracial adults with a mental illness receive no treatment.
- Sexual assault is also a significant issue, with 1 in 3 Indigenous women experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime.

These statistics highlight the barriers many minorities face in accessing mental health care, including stigma, lack of culturally competent providers, and socioeconomic factors. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and everyone deserves to have access to mental health care.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out to community organizations, trusted healthcare providers, or mental health professionals can make a big difference. Let’s support and uplift each other by promoting understanding, compassion, and access to resources. Your mental health matters. ✨

June is also PTSD Awareness Month. ✨

As therapists to Veterans, active duty, firefighters, and survivors of abuse, the understanding bc and treatment of PTSD is near and dear to the clinicians at Arise Therapy. We understand that life happens to us, sometimes, and this can alter the way we move through the world. In honor of the month, here’s some PSTD psychoed facts:

1) not everyone who experiences trauma will have PTSD.
2) though PTSD is often portrayed in the media through symptoms of flashbacks and exaggerated startle responses, it can look very different for everyone! Anecdotally, some of the most common symptoms I have seen are sleep concerns, avoidance, isolation, decreased interests in things they used to enjoy, relationship problems, frequent negative memories, hyper vigilance, and irritability.
3) PTSD is a normal response to an abnormal event.
4) for most folks with PTSD, it’s not that they can’t do their jobs, it’s that they have a hard time doing their lives.
5) you can treat PTSD! There are many evidence-based approaches for the treatment of PTSD that have been supported by the research.

If you or a loved one struggle with PTSD, ask us where to start! We are honored to come alongside you, hear your story, and help you heal. ✨

June is Men’s Health Month. ✨

Historically, men have been taught to carry alot of weight while remaining “strong”. Strength can be found in places that feel unlikely, like vulnerability. Whether it’s mental health or physical health, this is your reminder to share your concerns, seek help, and know that we need vulnerable and healthy men to help propel the future. This month, we honor the unique challenges that men face in society and come alongside them their growth. If you haven’t invested in your mental health, how’s the time!
