Leaking with exercise isn’t just as issue after babies!
As many as 49% of high school girls struggle with athletic incontinence, or leakage in sport. The prevalence is higher when separated out by sport, gymnastics and rope skipping having nearly 80% complain of leakage. Other sports with higher rates of urinary incontinence include volleyball, soccer, as well as track and field. Many of these student athletes will struggle in silence and not tell their coaches potentially due to embarrassment.
Compounding factors include training volume with more time in sport generally correlating with higher rates of leakage, constipation, urinary frequency more than six times per day, and menstrual health which may be related to relative energy availability.
The number one intervention for these athletes is physical therapy, as we can work on weakness and coordination issues of the pelvic floor muscles as well as address these other factors that might be impacting their performance. Let’s not allow our sisters, cousins, daughters, or students continue to struggle and potentially quit their sport altogether. Disrupt PT would love to help keep them dry and on the field, court, or in the gym!
