CompassionWorks

CompassionWorks CompassionWorks was founded in 1998 by Jordan Shafer, MS, LPC.

It is now a multi‑partner LLC in Texas that provides EMDR Basic Training and Continuing Education opportunities for mental health professionals. CompassionWorks LLC provides EMDR training and Continuing Education opportunities for mental health professionals. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence‑based therapy that helps individuals move beyond emotional distress so t

hey can feel more present, grounded, and connected in their daily lives. EMDR therapy goes beyond talk therapy by helping the brain rewire how emotional experiences are linked—often reducing anxiety and opening the door to meaningful change. We offer EMDR International Association (EMDRIA)–approved EMDR Basic Training for mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, social workers, professional counselors, and graduate students in mental health-related fields who are completing their internships. Continuing Education (CE) credits are also available for EMDR‑trained professionals.

What makes a training?
The space?
The information?
The snacks (you know Amber loves snacks!)?
It’s the people to learn with, the live demos, and lots of laughs.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Houston for Utilizing EMDR with Grief with Dr. Roger Solomon.

We are already planning for next year!

EMDR training that holds up when you're back in the room with a real client.

💬 "I was prepared enough after the training to work with two clients in Phases 1 and 2. The notes made sense when I went back to them." — Trainee, EMDR Basic Training, Houston (Katy), TX, 2025.

That's the bar we train to at CompassionWorks: not just passing the course, but walking into your next session knowing what to do.

EMDR Basic Training and advanced workshops, multiple formats, new cohorts throughout the year — built for licensed therapists who want trauma-informed skills that transfer directly into clinical practice.

📌 Comment Roadmap and we'll send you the full syllabus + upcoming training dates.

The illusion of "Digital Empathy" is becoming a clinical liability. 👇

We are seeing a massive rise in clients turning to AI chatbots for "therapy" or crisis management between sessions. While an AI can synthesize a validating sentence, it is fundamentally predictive text—not biological attunement.

The Clinical Reality:

⚠️ No Somatic Tracking: AI cannot see when a client’s breathing shifts, their posture tightens, or when they begin to dissociate.

⚠️ Dual Awareness Deficit: In EMDR and trauma processing, the clinician is the human anchor. A screen cannot maintain a client's "Window of Tolerance" during emotional flooding.

⚠️ Liability Risk: Processing trauma without real-time, biological co-regulation poses a significant risk of re-traumatization.

How to Address This in Session (Without Shaming):

If a client mentions using AI for support, use this clinical framework to redirect them:

1️⃣ Validate the Need: "It makes sense that you sought immediate support when your nervous system felt overwhelmed."

2️⃣ Educate on the Mechanism: "While tech can organize your thoughts, trauma healing requires biological safety. A screen cannot provide the co-regulation we build here in the room."

3️⃣ Redirect to Somatic Tools: "Let’s focus on the grounding tools we’ve practiced that rely on your own nervous system, rather than a digital output."

💬 Let’s talk: Have your clients brought up 'AI therapy' in session yet? How did you handle the conversation? Tell us below.

Effective EMDR practice requires a strong foundation in empathic attunement. However, when we apply the standard protocol without adjustments to neurodivergent clients, we risk misinterpreting their processing styles and inadvertently causing a therapeutic rupture.

If you want to deepen your ability to accurately assess the window of tolerance and adapt your practice to honor neurodiversity, this carousel is for you. 👉

Key areas we explore:
🔹 Why the standard EMDR protocol assumes a neurotypical baseline that doesn't always fit.
🔹 The importance of adapting Phase 1 (History Taking) to recognize the cumulative trauma of masking and systemic invalidation.
🔹 Practical adjustments in Phases 3 and 4 (SUDs and BLS) that respect diverse processing styles, including literal communication and the need for movement (stimming).

Elevating your standard of care requires a deep understanding of how to make EMDR therapy truly neurodiversity-affirming.

Is it just "Spring Energy" or is your client experiencing nervous system hyperarousal? 🐇🌱

As the seasons change, tracking rapid shifts in energy levels becomes a critical clinical focus. But how do you explain this to a client without overwhelming them with clinical jargon?

The Spring Hare Metaphor for The Window of Tolerance:

In trauma-informed therapy, the Window of Tolerance describes the optimal zone where a person can function effectively.

The "Spring Hare" metaphor helps clients visualize healthy nervous system oscillation.

It illustrates how a regulated system can safely experience:

🌿 High Sympathetic energy (play, movement, exploring)
🌿 ...without losing connection to safety (Ventral Vagal state).

If the system perceives a threat, that same energy becomes frantic and panicked.
