Mental health and addiction impact every community—including ours here in Montgomery County.

This Friday I’ll be joining the BHSP Addiction Workgroup meeting hosted by Woodland Springs Hospital to hear from local leaders discussing current trends in mental health and substance use, the growing need for treatment, and how communities can work together to support recovery.

Conversations like these matter. Collaboration between clinicians, hospitals, nonprofits, and community partners is how we move beyond awareness and toward meaningful response.

Grateful to be part of a community that is working together to support individuals and families.

Athletes are wired for performance.

But performance is not just physical.

Emma works with high school, college, and competitive athletes navigating performance anxiety, injury recovery, identity questions, and the pressure to always deliver. Her approach fits within our athletics-informed perspective, meaning she understands the mental load that comes with competition.

With Emma, therapy is not about dissecting everything that is wrong. It is about building what works.

At GCS:
• You lead the process.
• We focus on solution-building.
• We measure progress so you can see your mental performance strengthening over time.

Emma does especially well helping athletes:
• Rebuild confidence after setbacks
• Strengthen mental resilience
• Navigate transitions out of sport
• Balance identity beyond the scoreboard

Your body trains in the gym.
Your mind deserves training too.

First responders are trained to move toward what others run from.

That mindset saves lives.
It can also take a toll.

Emma works with firefighters, law enforcement, EMTs, medical professionals, and other frontline responders who carry cumulative stress, trauma exposure, and performance pressure. Her style is practical, focused, and respectful of the culture you work within.

At GCS, care is collaborative and purposeful. That means:

• You guide the direction of therapy.
• We focus on what is working and build from there.
• We track progress so your sessions stay intentional and effective.

Emma does especially well helping first responders:
• Regulate stress and sleep disruptions
• Process difficult calls and critical incidents
• Strengthen communication at home
• Prevent burnout before it becomes crisis

You protect others.
This is a space built to protect your well-being.

For many veterans, strength has always meant carrying the load.

But sometimes the strongest step forward is allowing someone to walk beside you.

Emma works with veterans navigating trauma, transition, identity shifts, and the quiet weight that can follow service. Her approach is steady, grounded, and deeply respectful of your lived experience. She understands that healing is not about “fixing” you. It is about honoring your resilience while helping you build what comes next.

At Guyton Counseling Services, therapy is client-driven. You set the direction. We collaborate toward what matters most to you. And we track progress together so you can see real change happening over time.

Whether you are adjusting to civilian life, processing past experiences, or strengthening relationships, Emma provides structured, compassionate support that respects your story.

You carried your team before.
Now let someone support you.

We’re humbled and excited to share that Guyton Counseling Services and its founder have been spotlighted by Voyage Houston in their “Community Highlights.” The article tells the story of a walk-on athlete, dyslexia and ADHD struggles, a family shaped by medical legacy and addiction, and ultimately a conviction to help others heal.

At GCS, we believe therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. We aim to meet clients where they are — offering solution-focused, trauma-responsive care that honors your experiences, your voice, and your goals. Whether you’re dealing with stress, trauma, grief, performance pressure, or just life’s transitions, we’re here to walk with you.

Honored to serve on the “Strong Minds, Strong Bodies: Addressing Mental Health in Competitive Youth Sports” panel alongside Michael Tyson (Founder of The Tyson Center), Dr. Quinella Minix (Founder of PSYFIT), Dr. Kerrie Patterson-Brown (Founder of Legacy The School of Sport Sciences), and our wonderful moderator, Jamie Edwards of Mindful Health, at this year’s ARCHES 2025 Adolescent Resource Collective Houston Expo & Symposium.

It was also so meaningful to reconnect with Drew Dutton, CEO of Phoenix House Texas — my first employer and a major influence in my early career — and to meet so many passionate professionals dedicated to advancing adolescent mental health and substance use treatment across our communities.

During the panel, I demonstrated the Miracle Question — a cornerstone of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) — illustrating how we at Guyton Counseling Services utilize client and athlete expertise to guide the therapeutic process. Every session, we measure outcomes and strengthen the therapeutic alliance to ensure progress remains client-driven, purposeful, and visible.

Grateful to the ARCHES planning committee and Ecclesia Houston for hosting such a thoughtful event and for creating space for collaboration that truly bridges prevention, performance, and mental health.

This morning we had the honor of attending the Mosaics Breakfast of Champions at the Jett Center.

We’re grateful to stand alongside community leaders, advocates, and changemakers who are dedicated to strengthening mental health resources in our area. Events like this remind us how powerful it is when people come together to support one another, reduce stigma, and build hope.

A big thank you to for creating space to celebrate champions in mental health and for the work you do every day.

📍 THSCA 2025 | San Antonio, TX
This past Sunday was a special day. Grateful for the chance to connect with coaches from across Texas who care deeply about their athletes’ mental health and personal growth. The energy, commitment, and curiosity in every conversation was clear. Sports in this state are a community, and it’s full of people who want to do community better.

At Guyton Counseling Services, we’re building out athletics-informed therapy and brief, responsive care to meet the real-time needs of athletes, coaches, and their families. Whether it’s managing performance pressure, processing injury, or navigating transitions, we’re here to serve.

If we met Sunday, I’m glad we did. If we missed you, reach out. Let’s keep the conversation going.

We’re honored to announce our Guest Speaker for Game Plan: Tackling Substance Abuse Together on August 17 at Magnolia High School. Jason Phillips will share his powerful personal journey with substance abuse and the lessons he learned as an athlete, beginning in Waller Texas, that helped him build a strong and lasting recovery. You won't want to miss this!!!

Jason Phillips is a former NFL linebacker, two-time All-American, and TCU Hall of Fame inductee whose achievements on the field were matched by the adversity he overcame off it. Starting in 2005 at TCU and ending after his 5th NFL season in 2014, Jason endured 11 surgeries and countless injuries across a relentless football journey that took him through Baltimore, Carolina, and Philadelphia. The physical toll led to chronic pain, mental health battles, and a struggle with opioid addiction, all while trying to uphold the identity and expectations of being an elite athlete.

Rather than let those challenges define him, Jason turned his pain into purpose. While working as a business development rep for a sporting goods company, he began speaking at high schools, delivering raw, relatable talks on discipline, resilience, and self-leadership. What started as a message for football players evolved into a mindset coaching movement known as Be M.A.D.E.—My Attitude Determines Everything. His talks grew into a framework embraced by entire athletic departments, coaches, youth leagues, and even parents.

His philosophy centers around what he calls Zero Talent Characteristics (ZTCs): effort, accountability, attitude, sacrifice, and the courage to rebuild. These traits not only fueled his rise in football, but they also became the foundation of his recovery from addiction. Every. Damn. Day.
