Mouth breathing equates to nasal obstruction and can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. This is because the sinuses make Nitric Oxide, a gas that is a very potent blood vessel dilator. A chronic cough can be caused by a host of problems(drainage, reflux, vocal cord polyp or nodule, allergies or chronic sinusitis). But there is one cause that is often overlooked- an elongated uvula that drapes over the back of the tongue and touches the epiglottis stimulating the cough reflex. The fix is easy. Trim the uvula.

A patient’s mother casually mentions her other son is tube fed because he can’t eat and breathe. He keeps a runny nose.

I immediately thiught adenoid hypertrophy and urged her to bring him in for a sinus scan. It’s not easy to smeat and breathe when your nose is blocked.

Adenoid hypertrophy can cause the same symptoms and can be remedied with removal.

I am so eager to to see if I am correct with my diagnosis.

I was honored to speak at the 2025 TAPAN nursing conference today. The topic was ‘Nursing Pearls; Caring for Nasal-Sinus Surgery Patients’. My talk was geared to how I focus on identifying the root cause for chronic ENT disorders and perform surgery directed to eliminating the problem.

Since Covid I rarely wear a suit so I had to spend some time figuring out what to wear.

We had a great discussion filled with lots of interesting questions.

Miss Willis has had left ear and neck pain for two years. She has seen multiple doctors. She was told she had an ear infection. She was told by another she had a hole in her eardrum. When Sidney, the medical assistant, presented her case to me, I made the diagnosis before seeing the patient.

She had a severe left, septal deviation piercing into the sensitive tissues of the nose, causing the pain to be referred to the ear and neck in addition to likely impairing the function of her eustachian tube.

This is one example of how more than 30 years of experience allows me to process information with an extensive knowledge and diagnose the root cause of disorders rapidly.

She used a CPAP for 6 years. It would fall off during the night. She was tired during the day needing to take naps. She felt like she was slowly dying.
