Today, hand-fasting is often used and has become a popular alternative to traditional wedding ceremonies. The ceremony typically involves the exchange of vows and the binding of the hands with a ribbon or cord, which is then tied in a knot to symbolize the couple's commitment to each other.

Is handfasting an alternative that you would consider?

Jumping the broom at weddings has a long and fascinating history that spans different cultures and continents. The practice has always been used by people who are ostracized and oppressed by the broader nation, state, or kingdom. Brooms have been used in wedding ceremonies for centuries, and the ritual can be traced back to at least the 18th century. It was largely practiced by marginalized populations in Europe, such as the British Romani, rural Welsh communities, Irish individuals, and various other people who lived on the margins of the British Isles. As Europeans who had jumped over brooms at their weddings came to the United States, so too did the ritual. It was soon adopted by another marginalized population: enslaved people in the American South. While broomsticks were used in some West African ceremonies, the earliest documented examples of people of African descent jumping over a broom in the U.S. are from the 1800s. It's fascinating to learn about the history and meaning behind this beautiful wedding tradition!

1. Visit the Hamilton County Probate Court website and download the marriage license application form.
2. Fill out the application form completely and accurately.
3. Both parties must appear in person at the Hamilton County Probate Court to obtain the marriage certificate. You will need to bring a valid photo ID such as a driver's license or passport.
4. Pay the marriage license fee, which is currently $75.00. The fee can be paid in cash or with a credit card.
5. The marriage license is issued immediately upon payment and is valid for 60 days.
6. After the wedding ceremony, the officiant must complete the marriage license and return it to the Hamilton County Probate Court for recording.
7. The certified copy of the marriage certificate can be obtained from the Hamilton County Probate Court in person, by mail, or online.

It is important to note that Ohio law requires a three-day waiting period before the marriage license can be issued. This waiting period can be waived in certain circumstances, such as if one of the parties is a member of the military.

Additionally, Ohio law requires that both parties be at least 18 years old to obtain a marriage license without parental consent. If one or both parties are under 18 years old, parental consent is required and other restrictions may apply.
