Decades of research have shown that round-the-clock fetal monitoring does not reliably predict fetal distress, and experts say it leads to many unnecessary surgeries. But it’s still used in nearly every birth in the U.S. because of business and legal concerns, a New York Times investigation found. https://nyti.ms/3WF7yLx

MYTH!
Reaching (or passing) your due date does not automatically make a VBAC unsafe. Let’s break it down:

The risk of uterine rupture does not increase after 40 weeks. This is a common misunderstanding that even some providers repeat. Research shows rupture rates remain stable after 40 weeks. (Zelop et al., 2001)

What does shift slightly after 40 weeks is VBAC success rates, but here’s a big reason why: after 40 weeks, there’s a higher likelihood of induction, and we know induction can lower VBAC success rates. So it’s not necessarily the due date itself—it’s the intervention patterns that come with it.

It’s also important to know that ACOG doesn’t consider someone “post-dates” until after 42 weeks. So if you’re 40+2 or 41 weeks, you’re still within the normal range of pregnancy!

If you want to dig into the research behind due dates, we highly recommend reading “Evidence on Due Dates” and “Evidence on Inducing for Due dates” by Evidence Based Birth — it breaks down what the data actually says about going past 40 weeks, induction, and the latter touches on what this means for VBAC moms specifically.

Your due date isn’t an expiration date, and only YOU get to decide if you feel comfortable going past it.

Dear Dad,

Welcome to the newborn days — where time feels strange, sleep is optional, and love grows deeper than you ever imagined.

Here are a few tips just for you:
👶 Hold your baby often. Skin-to-skin time isn’t just for moms — it helps calm your little one and strengthens your bond.
💗 Support your partner. She’s healing and adjusting, both physically and emotionally. Bring her water, snacks, and words of encouragement.
💤 Protect rest. Take shifts, keep visitors limited, and step in so she can nap or shower.
🍲 Keep meals coming. A fed mom is a happy mom.
💫Make sure visitors wash their hands.
🚫 If you’re feeling sick or sniffly, take space until you’re well. Protecting baby’s health is true love in action.

You don’t have to have all the answers — just be steady, patient, and present.
You’re her safe place, and your baby’s hero. 💙

Postpartum care is more than just baby care — it’s parent care, too. 💗
The first weeks after birth are a time for healing, rest, and adjusting to your new rhythm. Here are a few helpful tips:

✨ Rest when you can — your body just did something incredible.
🥗 Nourish yourself with real food and plenty of fluids.
💦 Hydrate! Water, herbal teas, and broths help with recovery and milk supply.
🫶 Ask for help — meals, laundry, or just company.
🤱 Feed frequently, rest often, and go easy on yourself.
🚫 Visitors: if they’re sick, sniffly, or “just a little off,” kindly ask them to wait.

Postpartum isn’t about bouncing back — it’s about easing forward into your new season of life. 🌸
