Aveanna patient Jamir is one of our tiniest heart warriors, and we’re honored to share his beautiful story during Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

Jamir was born with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a condition in which a fetal blood vessel remains open after birth, affecting blood flow between the heart and lungs. He also lives with Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a small opening in the wall separating the heart’s lower chambers.

From the very beginning, Jamir has shown remarkable strength.
After undergoing surgery to repair his PDA, Jamir continued to shine. Along every step of his journey, Aveanna nurse Amber has been there providing expert care, gentle reassurance, and celebrating each milestone as it comes. Her devotion helps ensure Jamir stays safe and supported as he grows.

It’s a true privilege to walk alongside patients like Jamir and the caregivers who champion them every day. This Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, we celebrate their incredible journeys that inspire us all.

During their 20-week fetal ultrasound, George's family learned that he had a congenital heart defect, news that grew more complex with every scan.

After he was born, he was diagnosed with Double-outlet right ventricle, a condition where the heart has two openings for blood to exit instead of one. This causes some of the blood to go to the body instead of the lungs. George also lives with Transposition of the great arteries (TGA), a rare heart condition that lowers the amount of oxygen-rich blood in his body.

Prior to his most recent surgery, George was oxygen dependent and required continuous j-tube feedings. In his short life, George has endured two open-heart surgeries, multiple cardiac procedures, and continues to rely on a G-tube. With the support of his Aveanna team, George's family can soak up every moment in between surgeries and know their loved one is safe.

We are honored to play a part in George's care journey! This week and every week, we shed light on our courageous patients with congenital heart defects and celebrate their strength and perseverance.

It's Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week! Aveanna is proud to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about congenital heart defects (CHDs) and support our patients who live with them.

CHDs are the most common type of birth defect and can affect the way a baby’s heart functions and pumps blood to the rest of the body. While some CHDs are relatively mild, others are more severe and might require surgery. There are an estimated 2.4 million children and adults living with CHDs in the U.S.

As we close out Patient Recognition Week, we are thrilled to tell Jamir's story of care with Aveanna!

Jamir joined Aveanna when he was just 5 months old. Ever since, nurse Amber has been by his side, ensuring his medical needs are met in the comfort of his own home. Whether it be supporting his tube feedings, monitoring his oxygen levels, or supporting his family with his care, nurse Amber and the rest of Jamir's Aveanna team are there for every win, big or small!

Aveanna is continuing to celebrate our incredible patients and their stories for Patient Recognition Week. Meet Valkyrie!

Valkyrie joined Aveanna in July after she came home from the NICU. Her hypertonia and apneic episodes made home care a necessity for her family. With Aveanna nurse Candace by her side for each step of her care journey, her family knows their little one is in safe hands. Valkyrie recent underwent a tracheostomy to help her breathe easier and meet her health goals. As she prepares to return home after her procedure, nurse Candace will be there to resume the same wonderful care she's provided since day one.

"Candace is amazing and knows Valkyrie as well as I do," said Valkyrie's aunt. "With her diagnoses, it takes two people to go anywhere, and it's like Candance has become part of our family. She is always there to make sure Valkyrie is ok, and I am truly blessed to have her. Aveanna has been such a blessing to my family."

At birth, Braydin was given less than a 1% chance of survival.

He was born at just 25 weeks gestation and weighed one pound. In his short life, Braydin has overcome numerous challenges including multiple cardiac arrests, blood transfusions due to anemia, and a battle with COVID-19. A recent tracheostomy has made a huge difference in Braydin's health journey, helping him stabilize so much that he recently came home for the first time after nearly a year in the hospital!

With their tiny miracle home for the first time, Braydin's parents have found a committed care team with Aveanna nurse Sue. Her vast experience working with patients like Braydin has given his family the comfort that their little one is cared for and supported in his next adventure.

We are honored to serve patients like Braydin to ensure they can flourish right where they belong: at home with their families. Welcome to Aveanna, Braydin!

Aveanna patient Jayden has shown us what true strength looks like.

Throughout 2025, Jayden faced multiple hospitalizations due to respiratory challenges. However, once he had a trach placed and received further support from a ventilator, his condition improved drastically. After months of perseverance, Jayden finally made it home this week!

With Aveanna nurse Natasha supporting his transition as he settles back at home, he can continue receiving the exceptional care he deserves. Jayden inspires us with his strength, and Natasha inspires us with her unwavering commitment. We are honored to be part of their journey!

As a micro-preemie, Aveanna patient Racarda has proven some of the strongest fighters come in the smallest packages.

After nearly a year in the hospital, Racarda joined Aveanna in August. His nurses, Jai and Olenkeya, play a pivotal role in his care, supporting his oxygen, g‑button needs, and growth every step of the way. With their help, Racarda has continued to hit milestones and experience new things like snow, all while staying safe and happy with his family.
