"I woke up not feeling well, which we thought was the flu. On the drive to the hospital, I ended up collapsing." ❤️‍🩹

Abby LaBonte, at just 41 years old, had a massive heart attack on her way to the ER on Valentine's Day 2025. When she arrived at Baystate Medical Center, she was identified as critically ill, in heart failure, and needing to be placed on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Machine. The dedication and persistence of her care team kept her alive while it was determined she would be transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for a heart transplant. 🏥

However, with dangerous winter weather conditions at play, Abby was not able to be sent by helicopter. With a perfusionist by her side running the ECMO machine, Abby was transported 90 miles east by ambulance to Boston. 🚑 ❄️

Thanks to the amazing treatment and advocacy from the care team at , Abby was kept alive to get to Boston and receive a successful heart transplant. Her and her family have remained forever grateful to all of the hands, and hearts, involved in this lifesaving effort. 🥹

Grief doesn’t take a holiday. 💙

For many, the winter holidays can intensify feelings of sadness, loneliness, and loss, especially when celebrating without a loved one for the first time. 😞 According to Dr. Stuart Anfang, vice chair of psychiatry at , these emotions are common and valid.

Planning ahead, giving yourself permission to rest, adjusting traditions, and accepting help from others can make the season more manageable. Some families even find comfort in honoring loved ones through memory rituals, volunteering, or creating new traditions together. ☃️

If grief begins to feel overwhelming or interferes with daily life, help is always available. You are not alone! 🫂

Our family had a blast at the 3rd Annual Hospital Bed Races at the Springfield Thunderbirds' Hockey Fights Cancer Night! 🏒

4️⃣ Baystate Health teams were decked out in themed costumes; IncrediNobles, S34 Dragons, Skeleton Crew, and the X-Racers. Four teammates pushed the bed while the fifth rode, racing from one end of the ice to the other, and back. 🏁

The Skeleton Crew and X-Racers advanced to the final, facing Holyoke Medical Center's Psych Force and B52 teams. The championship round was tight from start to finish, with all four teams crossing within seconds of each other. B52 ultimately edged out the field to secure back-to-back titles. 🏆

“Yonatty is an angel...I was awakened by the softest, kindest voice I had ever heard in our many days, over several hospital stays. Without an ounce of exaggeration, I can tell you I thought I was dreaming, and an angel was in the room." 🪽

We want to take a moment this Monday afternoon to recognize Yonatty Abreu, a patient care technician at Baystate Medical Center, for being one of our PETAL Award recipients this year! 🌸

The PETAL award celebrates non-nursing team members who go above and beyond in serving 's mission of delivering compassionate, patient-centered care. Yonatty's recognition comes from two heartfelt patient nominations, each expressing profound gratitude for the care and kindness provided during a hospital stay.

💬 “She was my PCT on multiple days and each day she spoke to me in Spanish to help me feel more comfortable."

💬 "She asked about my well-being as well as my emotions/feelings. During a time when my wife was unable to visit, she would come and spend 5–10 minutes cheering me up and visiting with me."

The Baystate Health Foundation event is the premier fundraiser for Baystate Noble Hospital, raising money for healthcare in the Westfield community. Hosted at the Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place Hotel, the night consisted of gourmet food, cocktails, talented entertainment, a speaking portion, a silent and live auction, as well as recognizing this year's Noble Spirit Award recipient, Deb Adams, RRT. 💙

Meet ➡️ Robin Walker, BSN, RN, Infection Preventionist at Baystate Wing Hospital.

Robin partners with every department—reviewing inpatient and emergency department census information, monitoring isolation needs, and supporting care teams with expert guidance. Her work helps stop the spread of illness before it starts. 🦠
