Women Physicians Day is celebrated every year on February 3rd, the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree.

Foot and ankle surgeon , Dr. Monica Zilkoski, has spent her career helping patients heal, but in the horse arena she found her own form of healing. From her early days as a nurse to years of orthopedic training and ultimately rediscovering her love of riding, she shows how healing is something we practice — in medicine, in movement, and in returning to what makes us feel alive. ✨
With her Dutch Warmbloods, Gala Dancer and Tulip, Dr. Zilkoski has embraced dressage as a source of balance and presence. Whether training or simply riding, she finds a reminder to stay grounded in the moment. “When I’m happy,” she says, “I’m a better doctor.” 🐎

🎉🥳𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 🎉🥳
This fall, we congratulated our first-ever cohort of physicians participating in the Physician Leadership Project (PLP) — a year-long program designed for developing and advancing physician leaders.
This inaugural group is paving the way for professional growth, collaboration, and leadership development across Lane County’s medical community. 👏⚕️
The PLP was funded through a collaboration between LCMS, the LCMS Foundation, the Autzen Foundation, and the participants themselves. The cohort comprised of fifteen physicians, primarily from small and medium-sized groups, along with a few from independent practices and large institutions. Two-thirds of the participants were primary care providers in mid-career, having 5 to 25 years of experience.
Thanks to the leadership skills and knowledge gained from the PLP, most participants reported significant improvements in patient care, program developments at their respective clinics, and increased financial prowess. Plus, we are in the process of welcoming a couple graduates to the LCMS Board of Trustees in 2026.
