The mission of the Occupational Therapy Department at Missouri State University is to educate holistic, reflective occupational therapy practitioners who understand the complexity of occupation and value its role in the promotion of health and wellness. Didactic and experiential learning will promote occupation-based practice, ethical leadership, community engagement, cultural humility, scientific inquiry, and life-long learning to develop generalist practitioners who are prepared to meet the needs of persons, groups, and populations across a variety of settings, including those in rural and underserved communities.

✨ Fieldwork Friday ✨

Elijah is completing his second level II rotation with Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO. He has been in the burn unit and acute care, along with evaluating new patients. Elijah has been enjoying making splints, learning the importance of contracture prevention and how a calm influence can benefit patients. He looks forward to learning more about how to work with medically complex patients and the best way to help them.

Matthew Brown, OTR/L, visited our Assistive Technology class to share his expertise in driver rehabilitation. Students had the opportunity to explore his adapted vehicle and learn about the tools and methods he uses for driver evaluations and training. Afterward, the students presented their adapted toy projects, showcasing their creativity and understanding of accessibility in play.

✨ Fieldwork Friday ✨

Aubrey is completing her second level II rotation with St. Louis Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO. She has been seeing patients on the neuro floor and also patients in the neuro rehab program. Aubrey has enjoyed becoming more familiar with a variety of diagnoses and building relationships with her patients, as well as the therapy dogs! It was recently announced that this hospital ranks number one in pediatrics in the state, so she is grateful to be learning alongside an amazing team.

Last week, Drs. Cardin, Chakraborty and Jackson attended the Society for the Study of Occupation: USA conference in Houston, TX. They did their fair share of networking, learning and even did some volunteering!

🐻 Dr. Chakraborty presented her research on stress, occupational balance, coping and well-being in healthcare graduate students.

🐻 Dr. Cardin presented her research on using a quilt block aesthetic to teach knowledge organization and professional reasoning.

We are excited to be partnering with Family Connection Center this holiday season! We will be collecting essential household items, such as laundry detergent, dish soap, hygiene items and more. This drive will run until Dec. 4 and you can drop your donations off in our office.

Donated items will benefit families working toward reunification, families who have recently been reunified and low-income families in our community.

✨ Fieldwork Friday ✨

Kirsten is completing her second level II rotation with Mercy in Springfield, MO. She is working with adults with neurological disorders such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, brain injury and more. Kirsten has enjoyed being challenged and seeing how much her clients accomplish each week. She is excited about how this rotations is preparing her to be a practitioner.
