Mary Anne Beck

Mary Anne Beck was born in September 1940 at the Springfield Osteopathic Hospital but within a few days was being royally escorted to my home at Wells Farm outside of Republic in the town hearse driven by my granddad R. E. Thurman, the town undertaker. My parents were Linzee and Daphne Thurman Wells; my grandparents were Joshua Gardner and Sue Linzee Wells and Robert Ellis and Anna Godwin Thurman, lovingly known as “Ponna.” With my sister Linda Louise and brother Donald Linzee, I grew up on Wells Farm and attended Republic schools, then went to Drury College and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in history, causing a certain amount of flak from the family when the yellow Trivial Pursuit questions were missed. In time I met the love of my life and my best friend Dale Edward Beck in Kansas City, and we spent the next joyful 58 years together, crowned by the births of our three sons, Joseph Edward (Catherine), Robert Thomas (Sarrah Cantrell) and Jeffrey Dale (Leigh Ann) as well as our two extraordinary granddaughters Chloe McKay Beck and Charlotte Anne Beck.

After our sons were a bit older I went to work at the National Catholic Reporter Publishing Company, where I made lifelong friends and co-founded the Pig Out Recreation Club, which I served faithfully as Notice Chairman. I moved to Rockhurst University for the next 20-plus years, where I did secretarial and administrative jobs and produced the Rockhurst Daily News, ending as Assistant to the President.

During those wonderful years I enjoyed gardening, sewing, playing and performing on the flute, cooking and eating and raising our boys. Wells Farm was always a focus of our lives and the scene of countless gatherings – Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas. We were also able to do some wonderful traveling in Europe with some of our best friends.

After retirement Dale and I returned to Wells Farm where we renovated the old farm house and moved in for the next 25 years. During those great years I enjoyed Nosegay Garden Club, St. Bernadette’s Guild, and card playing dates with friends at SEAS, but especially the Republic Historical Society’s activities. In 2008 I survived pancreatic cancer, having surgery which gave me another 17 years of life.

In addition to our immediate family, I am survived by my brother, Donald Linzee Wells (Pam) and their sons Joshua (Jamie), Jason (Carlie) and Jonathan, a brother in law, Roger William Leonard and his sons Michael and Eric (Nancy) and their families, a cousin, Kathleen Sailors (Bob), my Thurman cousins, as close as siblings – Bob and Dorothy, Tom and Libby and their very special children, and of course the vast, crazy and loving Beck-Johnson family who took me in as one of their own and loved me no matter what. You all are incredible.

There is a lot of love in the world, and I have received a lot of it.

A Memorial Mass for Mary Anne will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church: 2200 W. Republic Rd., Springfield, MO 65807, with Father Thomas Kiefer celebrating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Republic Historical Society, or the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, Inc.

Brenda Faye Gozia

Brenda Faye (Kyte) Gozia, 79, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on November 16, 2025, at home with her family, following a short illness. Born on April 16, 1946, in Carthage, MO, Brenda was the daughter of Lawrence and Mildred Kyte. She grew up in Joplin, Missouri, graduating from Joplin High School.

Brenda and her family relocated to Texas in 1970. Between 1972 and 1977, she welcomed four children, dedicating herself as a volunteer to support all their activities—from serving as a Girl Scout Leader and PTA President to cheering from the sidelines of baseball, soccer, gymnastics, tennis, swim team, and cheerleading events. Brenda was always the loudest supporter, first for her children and later for her grandchildren. Along the way, she also became a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, donning her Cowboys blue with unwavering hope and good-natured humor, always declaring, “This is our year!” Through every season—win or, more often, lose—her spirited allegiance sparked laughter and lively debates among family and friends.

In 1992, Brenda made Springfield, Missouri her home, where she embraced new opportunities and friendships. Committed to learning and growth, Brenda went back to school and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in 1997 and her Master’s Degree in Social Work in 1999, both from Southwest Missouri State University. Upon graduating, Brenda followed her passion and spent her career working with children and adolescents at Lakeland Behavioral Health System, an established psychiatric hospital and treatment center in Springfield, where her kindness and empathy touched many lives. She worked there full-time until her retirement, leaving a legacy of support and encouragement for colleagues and clients alike.

In her later years, Brenda found joy each morning sitting on her porch swing, sipping coffee while admiring her growing vegetables and dreaming up new flower arrangements to plant next. She cherished her visits to Pineville, Missouri, where time spent along the Elk River brought back fond memories of family trips throughout her life. For the past two decades, Brenda’s week wouldn’t have been complete without gathering for lunch or happy hour with her Friday 5 friends, sharing stories and making treasured memories together.

Brenda’s life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her love for her family and many of her very close friends. Her kindness, wisdom, and humility will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know her.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Mildred Kyte. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Kevin Weiss, of Dallas, TX; her daughter Erin Gozia, of Springfield, MO; her sons, Hayes Gozia and Bob Gozia, of Springfield, MO; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and her brother and sister-in-law, Brent and Phyllis Kyte.

Funeral Services will be held at 11am Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut Street in Springfield, Missouri with Pastor Gary Griffin officiating. Visitation will follow the Funeral Service at the Funeral Home. The family invites attendees to wear comfortable, casual attire.

Charles (Chuck) Wendell Higdon, Jr.

On November 17, 2025, the world lost the kindest of men, Charles (Chuck) Wendell Higdon, Jr., (77), who was born December 2, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles Wendell and Narva Hilda (Crites) Higdon. He often reminisced about his fun-filled childhood, which he credited to his amazing parents.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sylvia Maxine Alford and two sons, Joseph Matthias and Matthew Michael Higdon.

Chuck is survived and missed by his sons, Charles Wendell Higdon, III spouse Mara and their children Charles Wendell Higdon, IV, Penelope, Walter and Henry of Pacifica, California, and Jonathan Nathaniel Higdon of Marshfield, Missouri; twin daughters Jennifer Ann Higdon of Springfield, Missouri and Erika Sabina Higdon spouse Jason Bressler of Springfield, Missouri. Chuck is also survived by his loving wife, best friend, and High School sweetheart Ann Elizabeth (nee Essock) Higdon and her sons Adam Lee Weir spouse Kori of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and C. Paul Weir spouse Donna of San Clemente, California, loving nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Chuck attended schools in Alva, Oklahoma and Ferguson, Missouri. After graduating in 1966 from McCluer High School in Ferguson, Chuck attended Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

During Chuck’s career he owned a machine shop and was an owner/operator semi-truck driver for over 30 years. His many trips across the country left him with endless stories of the towns and people in them, which he was quick to relate to anyone with the patience to listen to his methodical style.

Chuck was a huge sports fan, his favorite teams being the St. Louis Cardinals and the Alabama Crimson Tide. He also was an avid NASCAR racing fan and made several trips over the years to hear the engines roar on the backstretch in person. His dreams of racing 4-wide at Talladega became brief reality when taking part in the racing experience there with his children. As he would describe it later, he blew past them at nearly 200mph, "as if they were tied to a stump."

Chuck lived with a quiet, stoic demeanor, but he was always up for an adventure. In his youth you could find him camping in the Ozark hills at Johnson's Shut-Ins with his high school buddies. There were countless days spent with his children nurturing their love of the outdoors, camping and canoeing along the ice-cold spring-fed Missouri streams during the heat of the summer. In his retirement, Chuck greatly enjoyed living with Ann on their country acreage in Strafford, Missouri, especially riding 4-wheelers with his grandchildren. When he was 65, he very proudly became a stock car race driver for several seasons. Even as the years were catching up with him, the adventurous spirit remained; zip-lining across the Royal Gorge and white-water rafting in Colorado, camping in Yosemite, and touring the countryside on his Spyder.

Please send any memorials to a charity of your choosing in Chuck's name. As per Chuck's wishes, there will not be a public funeral. Instead, he encourages you to gather with a few friends at your convenience, throw on some Traveling Wilburys, crack open a cold Diet Mountain Dew, and reminisce about the good times. Roll Tide.
